SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - As Easter services were held at churches all over the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry on Sunday, one church in particular decided to celebrate with an extra message.
Members of St. John Baptist Church gathered in song and praise to celebrate the Easter holiday on Sunday. One of the many messages from the service was to believe in the good of humanity and lead by example.
“We wanted to still bring a spirit of unity to let people know that there’s still wonderful people in our country and in our city,” said Pastor George Lee III of St. John Baptist Church.

Howard County uses church to addresses COVID-19 vaccine equity issues

Howard County is clocking in with one of the highest vaccination rates in the state at 21%, however, data shows among those 63,000 doses administered, inequities persist, and Monday local leaders announced a plan to bridge the divide.|| Coronavirus updates | Maryland's latest numbers | Get tested | Vaccine Info || St. John Baptist Church has stepped up before to offer help during the coronavirus pandemic. Previously, the church parking lot served as a drive-through coronavirus testing site in an effort to reach underserved populations and meet people where they are.Maryland online vaccination site locatorVaccine Data DashboardMaryland vaccination plan FAQsOn Monday, the county announced the church will host COVID-19 vaccine clinics as part of a vaccine equity push.Howard County Executive Calvin Ball rolled up his left sleeve Monday for the single-dose Johnson & Johnson, also known as the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. The point of doing this so publicly is two-fold: To convince constituents to get the vaccine when they get the chance and to boost confidence in the efficacy of the J&J option.Administered for the first time on Monday, the Howard County Health Department got 400 doses in the first shipment from the state. The vaccines got into the arms of school staffers, elderly residents and Ball himself. "I want our message to be clear: Whichever vaccine is available to you, you should get it,” Ball said.Twenty-one percent of Howard County residents have had at least one COVID-19 shot so far, according to the data. The data also shows racial gaps persist:African Americans comprise 20% of the county's population, but only 13% of those vaccinated.Asian residents make up 18% of the population, but 12% of those vaccinated.Hispanic residents make up 6% of the population and just 3% of those with a COVID-19 shot so far."This is not good enough for the county. We can and we must do better,” Ball said.County leaders plan to knock down barriers to access by launching mobile clinics at houses of worship and for the homebound."It's time for us to move down the next track of ameliorating the hesitancy and the access issues,” Ball said."If you want to get vaccinated near where you live, work or worship, come and get it,” Rev. Robert Turner, of St. John Baptist Church said.Important note going forward: The clinical studies show you reach full immunity 28 days after getting one J&J shot, so 11 News asked Howard County health officials if they will change data metrics from first and second doses to fully immunized?A Howard County health officer said a J&J shot would go into both columns, so look to the number of final doses to keep tabs on the fully immunized.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — New York State held a one-day clinic on Monday, offering 250 COVID-19 vaccinations to the congregation of St. John Baptist Church near the Buffalo Medical Campus.
“We’re talking about populations that have a much higher death rate and higher rate of contracting the virus and having serious consequences and ending up in the hospital," said New York Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul who visited the site, in explaining why the state decided to conduct the special clinic amid what it calls a shortage of the vaccine.
