Incidence of diabetes following COVID-19 vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 infection in Hong Kong: A population-based cohort study

Author summary Why was this study done? There have been an increasing number of cases of type 1 diabetes reported following Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccinations. The relationship between receiving COVID-19 vaccines and incident diabetes has not been examined in population-based studies. Several nationwide cohorts reported higher risks of incident diabetes following Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The risk of incident diabetes following infection by SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants may differ from that following infection by earlier variants. It is also uncertain how vaccination status may influence the risk. What did the researchers do and find? This study included 167,337 CoronaVac, 158,378 BNT162b2 recipients, and 145,199 COVID-19 patients with their respective 1:1 matched control. There was no evidence of increased risks of incident diabetes following COVID-19 vaccination. Regardless of predominant circulating variants, SARS-CoV-2 ....

A multi-country, prospective cohort study to measure rate and risk of relapse among children recovered from severe acute malnutrition in Mali, Somalia, and South Sudan: a study protocol | BMC Nutrition

The Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) model transformed the treatment of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) by shifting treatment from inpatient facilities to the community. Evidence shows that while CMAM programs are effective in the initial recovery from SAM, recovery is not sustained for some children requiring them to receive treatment repeatedly. This indicates a potential gap in the model, yet little evidence is available on the incidence of relapse, the determinants of the phenomena, or its financial implications on program delivery. This study is a multi-country prospective cohort study following “post-SAM” children (defined as children following anthropometric recovery from SAM through treatment in CMAM) and matched community controls (defined as children not previously experiencing acute malnutrition (AM)) monthly for six months. The aim is to assess the burden and determinants of relapse to SAM. This study design enables the quantification of r ....

Economic Growth and Its Pro-Poorness in Zambia 2006-2015: To What Extent?

Economic growth and its impact on economies
and citizens has been widely debated by economists for some time with its key
attributes including the fact that the benefits of such growth trickle down to
all sections of society, especially the poor. This trickle-down hypothesis has
come into question in recent times with prominent authors proposing a pro-poor
measure of economic growth. Using the methodology developed by Kakwani et al.
(2004) applied to the Zambia Living Conditions. Monitoring Surveys of 2006,
2010 and 2015, this paper empirically executes the measurement of the
pro-poorness of economic growth in Zambia in the period 2006-2015. We find that
economic growth in Zambia has not been pro-poor based on the poverty equivalent
growth rate criteria. Despite positive economic growth being recorded over this
period and the poverty rates declining slowly, the poor in Zambia derived
pro-portionally less benefits from such growth than the ....
