Phenotypes of Mild-to-Moderate Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - Vimarsana News

Phenotypes of Mild-to-Moderate Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Purpose: Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are complex and heterogeneous inflammatory diseases. We sought to investigate distinct disease profiles based on clinical, cellular and molecular data from patients with mild-to-moderate obstructive pulmonary diseases. Patients and Methods: Patients with mild-to-moderate allergic asthma (n=30) and COPD (n=30) were prospectively recruited. Clinical characteristics and induced sputum were collected. In total, 35 mediators were assessed in induced sputum. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the optimal factors th...

Frontiers | A Disrupted Historical Fire Regime in Central British Columbia

Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada In the 2017 and 2018, 2.55 million hectares burned across British Columbia, Canada, including unanticipated large and high-severity fires in many dry forests. To transform forest and fire management to achieve resilience to future megafires requires improved understanding historical fire frequency, severity, and spatial patterns. Our dendroecological reconstructions of 35 plots in a 161-hectare study area in a dry Douglas-fir forest revealed historical fires that burned a...

Effect of natural mutations of SARS-CoV-2 on spike structure, conformation, and antigenicity - Vimarsana News

Effect of natural mutations of SARS-CoV-2 on spike structure, conformation, and antigenicity

SARS-CoV-2 variants with multiple spike mutations enable increased transmission and antibody resistance. Here, we combine cryo-EM, binding and computational analyses to study variant spikes, including one that was involved in transmission between minks and humans, and others that originated and spread in human populations. All variants showed increased ACE2 receptor binding and increased propensity for RBD up states. While adaptation to mink resulted in spike destabilization, the B.1.1.7 (UK) spike balanced stabilizing and destabilizing mutations. A local destabilizing effect of the RBD E484K ...

Frontiers | Attributes of Drying Define the Structure and Functioning of Microbial Communities in Temperate Riverbed Sediment

2Institute of Environmental Sciences, Koblenz-Landau University, Landau, Germany 3Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research (WSL), Birmensdorf, Switzerland Combined effects of climate change and increasing anthropogenic water demand have increased and extended dry period occurrences in rivers worldwide. Riverbed drying can significantly affect sediment microorganisms, crucial drivers of biogeochemical processes in lotic systems. In this study, we evaluated how sediment bacterial and fungal community structure and composition (based on 16S rRNA gene and ITS metabarcoding...

Assessment of the causal relevance of ECG parameters for risk of atrial fibrillation: A mendelian randomisation study - Vimarsana News

Assessment of the causal relevance of ECG parameters for risk of atrial fibrillation: A mendelian randomisation study

In a Mendelian randomization analysis, Parag Gajendragadkar and colleagues investigate associations between genetically-predicted EEG parameters and risk of atrial fibrillation among UK Biobank participants.
