Turning Trash to Natural Gas: Utilities Fight for Their Future Amid Climate Change

A new San Francisco Muni bus next to a cable car in 1947, the year the city considered closing the Powell Street line.Bill Young / The Chronicle 1947
It’s a strange sensation as a journalist, picking a side in a debate, forming a self-righteous (and not particularly controversial) stand and then conducting further research only to realize … that you were the villain in this movie all along.
That was the feeling I had yesterday, upon learning that The Chronicle, your compass for living in the city and my beloved employer of 21 years, once tried to hasten the extinction of the cable car system. (The cable cars have been sidelined for nearly a year during the current pandemic, and news broke last week that a reopening may be far in the future.) ....

Like most events, Napa Valley’s most extravagant annual party has been canceled this year and it may never return. Auction Napa Valley, which began as a modest charity wine auction in 1981 and grew into a frenzied display of the valley’s wealth and status, is contemplating its future. ....

A scene from the first Macworld at Brooks Hall in San Francisco on Feb. 21, 1985.Steve Ringman / The Chronicle
The first big Apple computer convention was introduced to San Franciscans with a $5 off clip-and-save coupon. There was no online registration only cash or checks, and “no credit cards accepted.”
But despite the analog vibe of the first Macworld Expo in 1985, there were signs of the revolution to come. The trade show and conference that launched on the weekend of Feb. 21-23, 1985, would become a giant before its end in 2014, and precursor to massive company-focused conventions such as Dreamforce and Oracle OpenWorld. And the organizers, in their bombastic text, if anything undersold the importance of their debut event. ....
