And now the first case has been detected in the United States, Colorado officials announced Tuesday afternoon. Health officials have warned that the variant – which was first found in the United Kingdom in September – was likely already in the country. “You really need to assume that it s here already, and certainly is not the dominant strain, but I would not be surprised at all if it is already here, Anthony Fauci, the country’s top infectious disease expert, said last week. Though the variant doesn’t seem to be more deadly, research has indicated it may be as much as 70 percent more transmissible compared with other versions of the coronavirus. ....
