DOH studying administration of 2nd booster shot

(PNA photo by Oliver Marquez) MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) is studying the administration of a second booster shot to fully vaccinated senior citizens and individuals with comorbidities, a health official said. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire made this statement after the vaccine expert panel (VEP) recommended a second booster shot or fourth dose of Covid-19 jabs to the concerned priority groups. "The recommendation of a second booster dose for senior citizens and the moderate to severely immunocompromised individuals stems from the decrease in antibody titers seen in studies and their increased risk towards morbidities when infected with Covid-19," Vergeire said in a message to reporters Tuesday night. The second booster is recommended to be administered four months after the first booster dose to further increase the protection against the disease. "People who are young and healthy and don't have risk factors will probably not benefit much from a fourth dose when faced with Omicron," Vergeire said. National Task Force Against Covid-19 deputy chief implementer Vince Dizon earlier said they support the recommendation of the VEP to inoculate an additional fourth dose or second booster shot for the senior citizens and the immunocompromised. The DOH has received the official recommendation of the Department of Science and Technology-VEP for a fourth dose for the moderately and severely immunocompromised, and individuals most vulnerable to severe forms of Covid-19 such as the elderly. "Recommendations also state that a fourth dose or second booster dose is beneficial for individuals who are at very high risk of exposure to Covid-19 cases such as healthcare workers, airport personnel, and the like," Vergeire said. The references and recommendations provided will be forwarded to the Health Technology Assessment Council for assessment and concurrence, she added. The DOH has planned to engage its community of experts within the month to come up with evidence-based and data driven-recommendations about the second booster dose. (PNA) }

Mask-free in Level 1 open areas possible if cases drop further

(File photo) MANILA - Slowly ditching the face mask requirement in open areas under Alert Level 1 status is possible if coronavirus cases continue to go down. National Task Force Against Covid-19 special medical adviser, Dr. Ted Herbosa, said at the Laging Handa public briefing on Friday it may be considered as one of the adjustments under the so-called new normal. "Ang susunod nito ay maaring 'yung pagsuot ng mask sa outdoor areas, so sa indoor na lang tayo magma-mask lalo na kung bababa ang cases (The next step might be the removal of face mask requirement in outdoor areas. So we will only use face mask indoors, especially if the cases will further decrease)," Herbosa said, but emphasized it is just his view and will still be subject to evaluation. Masks prevent the user from inhaling or absorbing droplets and particles that other people may breathe, cough or sneeze out, especially if worn properly and will cover the nose and mouth. Only 853 new infections were recorded Friday for an overall 50,230 active cases, down from the previous day's 866 new infections. As part of continuing efforts to bring back normalcy, the government will hold another National Covid-19 Vaccination Days (Bayanihan, Bakunahan 4) on March 10 and 11, prioritizing the administration of booster doses to senior citizens and those with comorbidities. The Philippines has so far administered more than 63.4 million doses of Covid-19 primary series nationwide, including those who received the single-shot Janssen and Sputnik Light jabs, while over 10 million fully vaccinated had the booster dose. Razon) MANILA - More than 63 million Filipinos are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19 while 663,384 children aged 5 to 11 have the first dose, the National Vaccination Operations Center (NVOC) reported on Saturday. NVOC chair and Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje said the total fully vaccinated Filipinos represent 70 percent of the government's 90 million population target and 80 percent of the total population. The government targets to fully inoculate at least 70 million Filipinos by March and 90 million by June this year. About 9.7 million have likewise received booster or additional doses. National Task Force Against Covid-19 Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. earlier said one of the immediate concerns is to make sure the vulnerable sector has enough protection against Covid-19 infection. In his recent report, Galvez said only 69.31 percent of the senior population have acquired at least two doses. "We will continue to concentrate on the remaining three million senior citizens and with those with comorbidities," he said. Galvez said the conduct of house-to-house Covid-19 vaccination will be enhanced to reach more vaccinees. Some local government units provide transportation services for senior citizens and those with comorbidities to reach inoculation sites. The country has received 224,823,360 Covid-19 vaccines doses as of February 18, both procured and donated. (PNA) }

More than 4M Pfizer jabs arrive; 780K doses for 5-11 group

NEW DONATIONS. Customs personnel inspect the shipment of 3,436,290 doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine that arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 via a Silkway Airlines flight on Thursday night (Feb. 10, 2022). The jabs were donated by the United States government through the COVAX Facility. (PNA photo by Avito C. Dalan) MANILA - More than four million doses of the Pfizer vaccine against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) arrived in two tranches at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Thursday night. First to land at Terminal 3 was the Air Hong Kong flight carrying 780,000 doses intended for the vaccination of minors aged five years to 11 years, procured by the government through the World Bank. About two hours later, 3,436,290 doses donated by the United States government through the COVAX Facility arrived at Terminal 2 via Silkway Airlines. National Task Force Against (NTF) Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.; United States Agency for International Development Health Director Michelle Lang-Alli; NTF special adviser Dr. Teodoro Herbosa; and Department of Health Undersecretary Ma. Carolina Vidal-Taino welcomed the twin deliveries. "This is so important for the kids in the Philippines so they can go back to school, enjoy sports, enjoy cultural events, and be happy, normal kids again," Lang-Alli said in an interview. The Pfizer vaccine, with a lower dose, is the only brand that has been approved for the five- to 11-year-old category. According to the National Vaccination Operations Center, a total of 26,363 children nationwide in the youngest age group have been administered the first dose in 40 sites as of February 9, or two days after inoculation started. In an earlier statement, Galvez said the national government may need to impose a "strong mandate" on vaccination in the future once the majority of children are vaccinated and the country already has a bigger supply inventory of the Covid-19 jabs. "Step by step kasi sa ngayon. Konti pa lang ang nababakunahan and we cannot mandate them na talagang lahat bakunado (We do it step by step by now. Only a few have been vaccinated for now and we cannot mandate yet that everyone should be vaccinated)," he said. (PNA) }

US DONATION. National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. (center), leads other officials and guests in welcoming the arrival of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccines at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 on Thursday night (Feb. 10, 2022). More than four million doses of the Pfizer vaccine arrived, 780,000 doses of which are for the vaccination of minors aged five years to 11 years. (PNA photo by Avito Dalan) MANILA - The government has received a positive response from parents of children aged five years to 11 years who have availed of vaccines against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). National Vaccination Operations Center (NVOC) chair, Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje, on Friday described as encouraging the general feedback on the ongoing inoculation of children in 45 sites in Metro Manila, five in Central Luzon, three in Calabarzon, and one in Cotabato City. "Iyong ating pagbabakuna ng five (years) to 11 (years), mainit naman ang reception. Although inaayos natin kasi kulang pa iyong ating mga bakuna (Our vaccination for the five to 11 age group has been warmly received but we still have to secure more doses)," she said during a Laging Handa public briefing. National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., earlier cited the urgency of vaccinating students in preparation for the resumption of face-to-face classes. "'Pag nagkaroon na ng opening of classes, as much as possible, 'yung pupunta lang sa face-to-face are all vaccinated. 'Yung hindi vaccinated, ibig sabihin doon sila sa(As much as possible, only children who have been vaccinated can attend face-to-face classes. Those unvaccinated will continue with) online learning," he said in a statement. The NVOC data showed that at least 52,000 children belonging to the youngest age group have received their first dose, with five non-serious adverse effects on record. The common side effects were rashes, vomiting, and pain on the injected area. The government allows the inoculation of children from five years to 17 years but only with parental consent. (PNA) }
