Moiré patterns facilitate discovery of novel insulating phases

RIVERSIDE, Calif. Materials having excess electrons are typically conductors. However, moiré patterns interference patterns that typically arise when one object with a repetitive pattern is placed over another with a similar pattern can suppress electrical conductivity, a study led by physicists at the University of California, Riverside, has found.

Corn belt farmland has lost a third of its carbon-rich soil

More than one-third of the Corn Belt in the Midwest - nearly 30 million acres - has completely lost its carbon-rich topsoil, according to University of Massachusetts Amherst research that indicates the U.S. Department of Agriculture has significantly underestimated the true magnitude of farmland erosion.
In a paper published in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers led by UMass Amherst graduate student Evan Thaler, along with professors Isaac Larsen and Qian Yu in the department of geosciences, developed a method using satellite imagery to map areas in agricultural fields in the Corn Belt of the Midwestern U.S. that have no remaining A-horizon soil. The A-horizon is the upper portion of the soil that is rich in organic matter, which is critical for plant growth because of its water and nutrient retention properties. Three UH engineers named to National Academy of Inventors

Three University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering researchers have been named Senior Members of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) for 2021.
Hien Nguyen, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering; Jeffrey Rimer, Abraham E. Dukler Endowed Chair, William A. Brookshire Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; and Gangbing Song, Moores Professor of Mechanical Engineering, are among 61 academic inventors from around the country chosen for the prestigious honor for their remarkable innovation-producing technologies and growing success in patents, licensing and commercialization.
This national distinction honoring the research and scholarship of Drs. Nguyen, Rimer and Song is emblematic of the reputation for innovation fostered at the Cullen College of Engineering, said Paula Myrick Short, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at UH. February 11, 2021 - In honor of
International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), the Vilcek Foundation has released a free coloring book that celebrates the scientific careers and contributions of 19 outstanding contemporary women scientists and physicians.
The downloadable digital publication,
Think Like A Girl: A Coloring Book of Women Pioneers in STEM, features brief biographies of each of the 19 scientists, accompanied by illustrations by graphic artist Paula Kinsel representing each scientist and their work. Common pipistrelle bats attracted to wind turbines

One of the most abundant bats in Europe may be attracted to wind turbines, a new study shows.
The activity of common pipistrelle bats was monitored at 23 British wind farms and similar control locations close by without turbines.
Activity was around a third higher at turbines than at control locations, and two thirds of occasions with high activity were recorded at turbines rather than the controls.
The reasons for this are not clear. Possibilities include attraction to the turbines themselves, or the presence of more of the bats insect prey around turbines.
Either way it means the risk of fatality at wind turbines is increased, and probably explains the high fatalities of common pipistrelle bats seen at some wind farms across Europe, said Dr Suzanne Richardson. ....
