Two Dartmouth Engineering professors have been named to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) 2021 class of Senior Members: Charles Sullivan, professor of engineering, and Karl Griswold, associate professor of engineering. NAI Senior Members are active faculty, scientists, and administrators from NAI member institutions who have demonstrated remarkable innovation producing technologies that have brought, or aspire to bring, real impact on the welfare of society. They also have proven success in patents, licensing and commercialization.
Sullivan, who also serves as director of the Power Management Integration Center, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has published more than 200 technical papers in magnetics, power electronics, electric machine modeling and control, and energy efficiency. Other career honors include being named the recipient of an NSF CAREER award and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) ....

Recycling and optimized resource cycles, second use, and knowledge-based cell design are expected to enhance sustainability and safety of lithium-ion batteries in future. The basis is now provided by process engineers and materials scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), who jointly study the battery lifecycle. The new research projects are carried out within the battery research clusters greenBatt and BattNutzung funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Battery cells of constant high performance can considerably reduce the ecological footprint of applications, such as electric mobility. In addition, second use of such cells is considered, e.g. in large networks of storage systems. But not all cells are suited for such seco ....

Overview:
A color illusion that strongly induces color contrast effect has been found by a research team at the Toyohashi University of Technology Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Electronics-Inspired Interdisciplinary Research Institute (EIIRIS). The powerful visual illusion clarified a century-old contradiction relating to simultaneous color contrast theory. Through a human psychophysical experiment, the team demonstrated that the presence or absence of flanking contours formed from extremely thin white lines could be used to switch between contradictory visual phenomena (Figure 1), enabling consistent explanation for both discrepant theories. This solution alters theories of ....
