Biden steps up pressure on Russia to go after cyber criminals


“This will certainly be a topic of discussion, that harboring criminal entities that are intending to do harm, that are doing harm to the critical infrastructure in the United States, is not acceptable,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki

She stressed that the administration had raised concerns over the multiple Russian-linked attacks on U.S. critical organizations with Moscow and that protecting critical infrastructure was “of the utmost national security importance.”
“We believe that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals,” Psaki said.
The concerns around the Kremlin’s treatment of cyber criminals comes after months of escalating cyberattacks linked to Russia. ....

Scripps Health this week began notifying more than 147,000 individuals that their financial and health information was contained in documents stolen by attackers who deployed ransomware on the healthcare organization s network in May.
In a statement Tuesday, San Diego-based Scripps Health says its investigation into the incident discovered on May 1 has determined that an unauthorized person gained access to its network, deployed malware and, on April 29, acquired copies of some of the documents containing patient information.
As the investigation is ongoing, we do not yet know the content of the remainder of documents we believe are involved, though we are working with third party experts to determine those facts as quickly as possible, Scripps Health says ....

Cybercriminals have been able to act with impunity and without sufficient consequences, said experts at the recent RSA Conference 2021.
Ransomware attacks have become economically burdensome but also increasingly disruptive to basic services, such as health care and education. As the targets for attacks have increased given digitization, the economic and social impact has also grown exponentially.
The average ransom paid for organizations increased from $115,000 in 2019 to $312,000 in 2020, a 171% year-over-year increase, according to a 2021 report from Palo Alto Networks. Additionally, the highest ransom paid by an organization doubled from 2019 to 2020, from $5 million to $10 million. ....
