camp school in between, the sidewalk school has education for children who applied for asylum. joining us is the founder of the school. last time we spoke you said students come to you sad after their parents tried making asylum appointments. what do they share how they are doing in their hopes for the future? >> right now, there is a lot of confusion on the mexico side. i'm not sure if people are aware, when we make these laws, the news and -- the u.s. government doesn't say these are the laws and policies. that's up to ngos like the sidewalk school to show families and single adults these are the new laws and policies. you have to decide what you want to do.

that number grows, it could max out the current system, putting extraordinary new pressure on authorities and communities along the southern border. nbc ease gabe gutierrez is just across the border in juarez, mexico, and matthew dowd is back with me. gabe, first off, what is the situation like? what are people telling you about what their plan is once title 42 ends? >> reporter: hi there, lindsey, good afternoon. this is in juarez, mexico, as you said just across the border from el paso. this is near city hall, not very far from the actual border crossing, and you can see all these tents that are here, hundreds, if not thousands of migrants in this tent camp alone, which is actually right near this migrant tent -- migrant detention center, which caught fire you'll recall in march killing 40 people. and these tents extend all the way down the street, so lindsey, we've been speaking with some of these migrants here, and they say many of them have been here for weeks. some have heard of title 42.

march, killing 40 people there. gabe, what are you seeing there today? >> reporter: hi, good afternoon. we were in el paso yesterday. that city under a state of emergency. we decided to come across the border to see how things are going here. this is a migrant camp that has sprung up in the shadow of that migrant detention center that caught fire in late march and killed 40 people. the detention center is right over there. just show the number of tents that have sprung up. hundreds in this tent camp alone. potentially thousands of migrants that have come here to suarez throughout the city. this is something that border patrol officials are watching. they are watching to see how this plays out, whether the migrants try to cross before or after title 42 is lifted next week. i can tell you that i have been speaking with several of the migrants here. it's unclear how this will play out next week. some of them do tell me they are
