SC moots expert panel to look into green concerns for reopening of Sterlite plant

Hearing a plea by Vedanta Ltd, which owns the plant, a three-judge bench presided by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said that a “way forward” has to be found.

Vedanta said it had filed applications seeking reliefs from the top court to ensure proper upkeep of the Copper Smelter Plant, which were taken up for hearing. The court considered the report of the High Powered Expert Committee and the recommendations of the state government.

Supreme Court allows Vedanta's Sterlite plant in Tamil Nadu to reopen oxygen plant for medical use
The Supreme Court has allowed Vedanta's Sterlite Industries in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin to reopen its oxygen production plant. A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud on Tuesday said that allowing Vedanta to operate its oxygen plant would not create any equity in favour of company.
The court added that Vedanta shall not enter, operate copper smelting plant under garb of the latest order. The copper unit was sealed by the state government in May 2018, days after 13 agitators were killed in police firing during a violent anti-Sterlite protest in the southern district.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapadi K Palaniswami has called for an all-party meeting on Monday to discuss the oxygen production at the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi.
This comes after the Supreme Court suggested the state government to take over the Sterlite copper unit and use its oxygen production capability for treating Covid-19 patients.

Share price of Vedanta rose over 5 per cent after the Tamil Nadu government allowed its shuttered copper smelter plant to produce oxygen for four months. The stock hit an intra-day high of Rs 239.60 on the BSE.
"It was decided in an all-party meeting that Vedanta be allowed to operate the oxygen plant for a temporary period of four months," the Tamil Nadu government said in a statement. However, the production of copper would not be permitted.

Vedanta jumps on buzz TN Govt allows Sterlite plant to produce oxygen for 4 months


Vedanta rose 4.21% to Rs 237.45 on reports that the Tamil Nadu government has allowed the company's Sterlite Industries plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu to produce oxygen for four months.The media reported that the Tamil Nadu government on Monday allowed Vedanta's sealed Sterlite Industries in Tuticorin to operate for the production of medical oxygen for a four-month period in view of the depleting oxygen reserves amid the massive spread of the coronavirus cases.
The decision was taken during an all-party meeting convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami. While granting the permission, the state government directed the Sterlite plant not to be involved in the production of copper or any other material.
