'Diverse and growing needs': Berkeley Public Library seeks community input on strategic plan

In 2019, the Berkeley Public Library asked Berkeley residents for feedback on its services. Community members responded that they wanted the library to launch a cooking collection – and the library delivered. Now, niche cooking tools like air fryers, ice cream makers and special pans are available for checkout in the Berkeley Tool Lending Library.

A Moody Wedding at a New York City Restaurant

A New York City couple did their wedding their own way, hosting 120 friends and family at a Chinatown restaurant and nightclub. They paid homage to family with a film directed by the groom and a traditional Chinese lion dance, but infused their personality by creating custom playlists and eschewing wedding florals.

The Berkeley Public Library is among the best of the best.
The Library Journal, a New York-based trade publication for librarians founded in 1876, says Berkeley's public library was one of just two libraries in California worthy of a five-star rating in 2020.
The journal reviewed more than 5,600 public libraries in the United States from data reported in the Institute of Museums and Library Services' Public Library Survey.
"It is a big deal," said Tess Mayer, Berkeley's director of library services. "We were only one of two in California to get this. This is a significant number."

Meet Berkeley Public Library's new director, Tess Mayer

Tess Mayer could not have taken over leadership of the Berkeley Public Library at a more difficult time.
Mayer moved from Seattle to Berkeley in late September to take up the helm of an organization with 116 full-time equivalent employees, a $19 million budget funded by taxpayers, five branch locations, 110,000 library cardholders and more than 1.5 million moving parts. (The amount of material circulating.) Yet the new director of library services has had to work in an almost deserted office (at the central branch of the library), has not been able to even shake anyone’s hand and has only met most of her staff — and the board members who hired her — via Zoom because of COVID-19 social distancing requirements.
