carolina, which has kept him rally this weekend kate bedingfield the biden at team are being pretty careful to stay out of this obviously this is not the biden justice department prosecuting him in this particular case, state case but the optics are what they are. do you think they're handling it the right way yeah, i do. >> i mean, i think the biden team has been well-served by being hands-off on this, both because it doesn't allow trump to seize on the idea that biden is somehow like persecuting him here. so i think that is good. but he's broadly, i think biden has been well-served by a message that says i respect norm it's important for our government to function the way it's supposed to that in and of itself was a compelling message in the 2020 campaign and was effective. so i think that's good. i also think it reflects the reality and it sort of goes to what matt was saying that either way, don't think this trial is going to be decisive in the campaign. now, i don't think it's good for donald trump to be clear. i don't think it's good when the backdrop of your campaign is a courtroom. i don't think this is helping him and it's certainly i think we see in the

russia invaded ukraine in a war many thought would end in a matter of weeks. during that time, ukrainian officials said at least 494 children have been killed with more than 1000 others injured. earlier today, president zelenskyy posted a video of himself visiting snake island, which became a symbol of ukrainian resistance in the earliest days of the war. ukrainian soldiers famously defied and ordered the russian worshipers are under the island. zelenskyy voiced his gratitude for everyone who fought to defend it, calling it a place of victory that will never be conquered. meanwhile, zelenskyy's government is thinking the u.s. for president the biden's decision to provide ukraine with cluster bombs despite some international objections. ukraine's defense minister insists they will only be used in nonurban areas and that careful records will be kept of where they are deployed for de- mining purposes later. biden's decision on cluster bombs comes days after he spoke with fellow nato leaders in lithuania. is any further delay in accepting ukraine into the alliance will only cause more

think there are a lot more conversations which we need to have as we return to capitol hill next week, especially those of us on the armed services committee. but, there are not a lot of great options for the president, or for allies, at this point. >> what about this threat posed to civilians by these undesignated bomblets? it is a concern when the russians have used them. >> it is absolutely a legitimate concern. we have seen the impact on civilians, in the past, which is why, from a humanitarian perspective, we all should be worried about this. but, it is my understanding, that ukraine has made certain commitments to the white house and to the administration about the way that they will use this, and we cannot forget that it is in ukraine's best interest to protect their civilians and fellow ukrainians.

to be used in civilian areas but to stop those tanks from rolling. it was not an easy decision, and we are not mentors of that agreement, but i -- it took me a while to be convinced to do it. the main thing is, they either have the weapons to stop the russians now through these areas, or they do not. and i think they need them. >> reporter: you heard, there, the president walked through his reasoning as to how he got to the point where they would provide these cluster munitions. but, it is a critical time, where ukrainians have struggled to make major gains in their counteroffensive against russia. it also comes at a time where the president is going on a eklong trip tomorrow, to the uk where he will meet with the

i don't speak to all of my colleagues, but the majority members of colleague in congress want to make sure that we provide ukraine everything it needs to win this war. russia has been engaging in the most brutal -- of this war, and we have been able to rally our allies, and provide ukraine with the support that they need. but, the truth of the matter is, right now, we have a choice between a bad option and a worse option. the bad option is what the president faced with these cluster munitions, versus the possibility that there could be a gap in the artillery that ukraine needs. we want to be sure that ukraine wins. i am grateful to the president for having spoken to our allies, forgetting assurances from ukraine. i

king and prime minister, and then to lithuania to discuss the war in ukraine and then he will conclude his trip in finland. over all of that i imagine you'll get questions about these munitions and next steps in the war in ukraine. >> thank you very much. you can see the entire interview with president biden tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. eastern. stay tuned for that, and that will be right here on cnn. let's continue the discussion now with texas democratic congresswoman veronica escobar, thanks for joining us. we know you sit on the armed services committee in the house of representatives but let me ask you flat out, do you agree with the white house decision, the president's decision to include cluster bombs in this package to ukraine? >> i can absolutely understand why the president said this was a tough decision. this was a decision that, i hope he did not have to make.

war continues it maintains a veto over nato's membership. so this means we are setting up russia continued to interfere, continue to wage war in ukraine in an effort to block a session. if the u.s. were able to provide an aggressive roadmap, if not by the next nato summit, that would pretty much kill ae wage war indefinitely. i think this would be a bold move with little risk, but i don't -- i fear that we are in a situation where the risks are too high right now. >> we are watching that issue right now. in the meantime, president biden approved sending cluster munitions to ukraine as a part of a new military aid package. as you know, and the president acknowledged this, it is a controversial decision.
