SEPTA Transit Police union authorizes strike, joining transport workers

SEPTA's Transit Police union has voted to authorize a strike if a new contract agreement isn't reached. The Fraternal Order of Transit Police Lodge 109 represents about 175 officers. Their contract expired in March and they are seeking pay increases to improve officer retention. They're the second SEPTA union this month to authorize a strike, joining Transport Workers Union Local 234.

SEPTA bans ski masks following recent bus shootings, complaints from customers

SEPTA Transit Police officers will begin telling riders to remove ski masks that conceal their identities following a pattern of crimes involving suspects who had been wearing these face coverings, officials said. People who wear face masks for health reasons, those wearing hoods and those who have religious coverings, such as hijabs, will not be affected by the policy. SEPTA said the policy is intended to deter crime and that some riders have complained of others wearing ski masks.

SEPTA bus shooting leaves two men injured in North Philly

Two men were injured Wednesday in a shooting on a SEPTA bus in North Philadelphia, police said. The shooting happened in the area of 21st and Diamond Streets. The two victims, both 18, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident comes days after a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot while standing on the Market-Frankford Line subway platform at 52nd Street Station. Last week, SEPTA promoted Charles Lawson as the authority's transit police chief. His predecessor, Thomas Nestel III, resigned last year amid increasing problems with crime and safety on the transit system.
