Stella Maris is one of the first Maryland nursing homes to receive COVID-19 vaccine December 23, 2020 Stella Maris – Maryland’s largest long-term care facility – has become one of the first nursing homes in the state to receive doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for residents and staff. Representatives from Walgreens pharmacy arrived on the sprawling Timonium campus Dec. 23 to distribute more than 400 doses of the Pfzier vaccine, which must be kept at extremely cold temperatures to remain effective. “Well, I think it’s really just the first step in getting through this horrible trauma that we have all been a part of. And it’s not going to fix everything immediately, but it’s definitely going to be part of the solution,” said Regina Figueroa, chief administrative officer for Stella Maris, which is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. ....

Council leaders are wrestling with the prospect of asking residents to pay an extra 5% in council tax in 2021-22 after a year in which many have faced reduced income and unemployment as a result of Covid and with elections on the horizon for most upper tier councils outside London. However, leaders told LGC they fear having to make further cuts to services if they do not apply the 2% increase to regular council tax and 3% adult social care precept that was announced at the spending review for upper tier councils. Analysis from the Institute for Fiscal Studies found the government’s assumption that all councils will make the maximum council tax increase available to them accounted for three quarters of the 4.5% increase in local government spending power advertised by the chancellor. ....
