Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of the state Covid task force, said people should stop panic-buying the drug. “The rush for the drug is unfounded. It has restrictions on use and should be given only during the first nine days. It's a drug that only reduces viral replication in the body. It does not have the potential to reduce mortality. No study of the drug, worldwide, has shown an ability to reduce mortality,” Dr Joshi said. He added doctors may be prescribing the drug, which cuts hospital stay, to make more beds immediately available for more Covid patients. A senior doctor, another member of the state Covid advisory group, said favipiravir is the only other antiviral being recommended besides remdesivir. However, favipiravir has better impact if administered during the first five to six days of Covid onset.
The city's third genome sequencing lab will come up at National Chemical Laboratory in Pashan PUNE: The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has decided to step up genome sequencing of the coronavirus by setting up a laboratory at the city-based National Chemical Laboratory (NCL). This will be the third such facility in the city, after the ones at National Institute of Virology and National Centre for Cell Science. CSIR director-general Shekhar Mande on Sunday said NCL will get adequately trained staff as well as funding. Mande said the facility will help researchers gain insights into the different variants circulating in Maharashtra.
The blaze was doused in half-an-hour. PUNE: A major fire broke in an old fruit and vegetable market in Pune early Tuesday morning, destroying at least 25 shops, fire brigade officials said. There was no report of any casualty, they said. The fire broke out around 4am in the Shivaji Market, a popular establishment in the Cantonment area in Maharashtra, a fire official said. At least 25 shops were gutted in the blaze, he said. "After receiving a call about the fire, we sent nine water tankers there and the blaze was doused in half-an-hour," Pune Municipal Corporation's fire department chief Prashant Ranpise said.
Representative image PUNE: The Wanowrie police have launched an investigation after an FIR was lodged on Friday night, stating thieves stole a luxury bus seized in a criminal trespassing case. The bus — with a jammer affixed on its tyre -- was stolen near Mahadji Shinde Chhatri on Wanowrie Road. Assistant inspector Bhagwan Kamble said on Saturday, “The 50-seater bus developed a technical snag and its driver parked it on a private property. Acting on a complaint by the property owner, we registered an FIR relating to trespassing against the driver and seized the bus.” Kamble said, “We then decided to tow the bus to the Wanowrie police station, but the towing operator was not available. We then affixed a jammer on the bus. But the bus was not found the next evening when night patrol visited the spot. The value of the bus is Rs15 lakh, while the jammer was worth Rs2,000.”

Pune: Around 160 passengers waiting to board the Air Asia flight (I5817) from Pune to Delhi were left in limbo for over 10 hours on Sunday at the Pune airport. Eventually, the passengers were allegedly told that the flight had been cancelled. The flight was supposed to take off from Pune airport at around 11am and reach Delhi by around 1.15pm. “The flight was scheduled to fly at 11am so we reached the airport by 9am and completed all the formalities. So, we have been at the airport for 10 hours now. We kept asking the airline authorities to tell us what had caused the delay but they were not clear and just said that there was a technical problem,” said Ashu Madan, a passenger who had been waiting at the airport since 9am.
PUNE: The Pimpri police on Monday registered an offence against four unknown persons for kidnapping and murdering chit fund business owner Anand Unawane. Unawane was kidnapped from Pimpri on February 3. His body was found near Mahad in Raigad district on Saturday (February 6). A case of murder has been registered with the Mahad MIDC police. Meanwhile, the Pimpri Chinchwad police have deployed six teams to trace the suspects. After Unawane went missing, his brother, ishnu, filed a missing person’s complaint with the Pimpri police on February 5. “During investigation, we came to know that around 10.15pm on February 3 four men pushed Unawane in the hatchback of a car,” a police officer said.
