Boston Pride is the organization that has organized the largest annual pride parade in New England. Today the group announced that it was shutting down all operations in response to demands from activists who accused the group of being racist and exclusive. Here’s a portion of the group’s statement about the decision:
Over the past year, we have invested time and energy to address the concerns of the community, both with our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access work with Dorrington & Saunders and by forming the Transformation Advisory Committee comprised of members of the LGBTQIA+ community to help bring change to our organization. We are grateful for all who have been involved in this process.

Amid a boycott over racial equity issues, the Boston Pride organization announced in a statement July 9 that it is dissolving.
"It is clear to us that our community needs and wants change without the involvement of Boston Pride," the statement on its website reads. "We have heard the concerns of the QTBIPOC community and others. We care too much to stand in the way. Therefore, Boston Pride is dissolving. There will be no further events or programming planned, and the board is taking steps to close down the organization."
Boston Pride, which held virtual events in June to celebrate LGBTQ Pride Month, has been criticized for being "whitewashed" and trans-exclusionary, according to a recent article in the Boston Globe.

BOSTON—In a press release received late this evening, Boston Pride informed media outlets about their decision to dissolve the organization, according to the statement sent by its current Board of Directors.
“It is clear to us that our community needs and wants change without the involvement of Boston Pride,” read the release whose letterhead showed the names of its Board one last time, President Linda DeMarco, Treasurer Malcolm Carey, Clerk Martha Plaza, and members Deborah Drew and Tina Rosado. “We have heard the concerns of the QTBIPOC community and others. We care too much to stand in the way. Therefore, Boston Pride is dissolving. There will be no further events or programming planned, and the board is taking steps to close down the organization.”

The board of directors behind the Boston Pride organization announced late Friday that it would dissolve, taking steps to close down the organization amid recent calls for change. "It is clear to us that our community needs and wants change without the involvement of Boston Pride," a statement from the organization's board of directors said. "We have heard the concerns of the QTBIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous People of Color) community and others. We care too much to stand in the way.""Therefore, Boston Pride is dissolving," the board of directors statement continued. "There will be no further events or programming planned, and the board is taking steps to close down the organization."The abrupt decision announced late on a Friday afternoon in July left many questions about the future of the pride movement in Boston and Massachusetts. "We know many people care about Pride in Boston, and we encourage them to continue the work," the statement said. "By making the decision to close down, we hope new leaders will emerge from the community to lead the Pride movement in Boston."The future of the Boston pride parade, which was canceled in 2020 and rescheduled from June to October 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, was not immediately clear. The Boston Pride board of directors had previously faced calls for its resignation, announcing last year a transformation advisory committee that it claimed would advise the organization to ensure that its vision, mission and values were in alignment and in the best interest of the LGBTQ+ community. A statement released in April said a committee of seven members of the greater Boston LGBTQ+ community would oversee the recruitment of new Boston Pride board members to ensure that the board is reflective of the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.Less than three months later, the board of directors announced the organization would be dissolved."Boston Pride undertook the transformation process as a result of the Boston Pride board’s response to concerns raised by Black, Brown, transgender people and other members of our community," the board's statement released Friday said. No Pride in Boston this year? That appears to be the case after Boston Pride released a statement late on Friday, July 9, 2021, that Boston Pride is dissolving.
"The organization's board dissolved, it announced Friday afternoon, and it won't be putting on any of its planned events. The move was made after Boston Pride worked to change amid criticism over inclusiveness," writes NBCBoston.com.
Whether or not this year's Pride parade, which was scheduled for June but was pushed back to September, will happen is up in the air. "The group grappled for months with complaints of structural racism, and it had hired consultants and formed an advisory committee to help facilitate that process," adds NBCBoston.com.

Boston Pride and the City of Boston today announced Friday that the 2021 Pride Parade and Festival will not be held in June due to the ongoing state of emergency declared due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The state has prohibited large gatherings until the state moves into Phase 4. Boston Pride and the City of Boston are considering moving the Pride Parade and Festival to a date in the fall of 2021 if all conditions are in place for such events.
Boston Pride also announced that it is creating a series of virtual events in June to commemorate Pride Month and the 50th anniversary of Boston Pride. Virtual events being planned for June include the Pride Flag Raising at City Hall Plaza and the Pride Lights ceremony to honor all those lost to and affected by HIV/AIDS. More information on these events will be available in the coming weeks.
