Vaccine roll-outs, which began in February in some countries in Asia, have so far had barely any impact on universities which are still implementing special measures for the coming semester and are likely to continue until at least June. Scrutiny of illegal foreign providers to be intensified

Scrutiny of illegal foreign providers to be intensified
The Nigerian government will continue to closely monitor illegal foreign higher education providers trying to get a foothold in the country’s education space amid a growing demand for qualifications that cannot be satisfied by existing private and public universities.
This follows the release by the National Universities Commission (NUC) earlier in February of a list of about 60 illegal universities, which were shut down because they failed to meet the minimum education standards.
In an interview earlier in February with
University World News, Ben Goong, the information and publicity director of the federal ministry of education, made it clear that foreign institutions providing sub-standard education were not welcome. ....

Students ‘drown in loneliness’ – Call to open universities

NL Times.
Primary schools and daycare facilities were allowed to reopen two weeks ago. Leaked reports state that secondary schools and vocational schools will soon be allowed to reopen, to a limited extent at least. But higher education remains closed.
“The colleges and universities remain closed without any prospects. Students are expected to get by, but they’re stretched thin. They are sucked into their laptops and drown in loneliness. Students must no longer be the victims of this crisis. Higher education urgently needs perspective,” Chiappino said. According to the LSVb, no ....

Coding a must-have skill for graduates and academics

Coding a must-have skill for graduates and academics
Efforts to establish and grow a pool of skilled coders across Africa have been picking up speed and range from informal coding boot camps to the embedding of coding in formal higher education qualifications.
In Southern Africa, coding has been embedded in e-commerce, computer science, statistics, IT and electronic engineering qualifications at university level.
In addition to dozens of universities including coding in a range of qualifications in Nigeria, some institutions in West and East Africa are also inspiring students to refine their skills through vibrant coding communities and innovative events such as hackathons and coding weeks. ....
