Belarusian students find refuge in Lithuanian universities

Belarusian students find refuge in Lithuanian universities
LRT  17 January 2021
LRT.
Yevgeniy Ignatsiyev might seem like an ordinary student who decided to pursue higher education in a foreign country. The 19-year-old from Minsk is now a student at the European Humanities University in Vilnius. But Ignatsiyev is not a student on exchange – he is a student in exile, one of hundreds of students who have been expelled from higher education institutions in Belarus for opposing the country’s regime. Reacting to the mass repressions, major Lithuanian universities invited persecuted students to start or continue their education for free. Some 200 Belarusians took up the offer. ....

African academics may perish even when they have published

African academics may perish even when they have published
A weak publishing industry in Africa, including the lack of distribution hubs and an intra-Africa book trade; curricula, pedagogy and learning processes still rooted in the colonial situation and the absence of a scholarship culture, are factors that are undermining the development and production of academic books on the continent.
The shortage of academic books written by African academics has forced African universities to rely heavily on imported works, even for studies with African-specific content such as history, literature, music, politics, sociology and economics.
According to Francis Nyamnjoh, a professor of social anthropology at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, various factors, including mediocre content, invisibility (because of the subject matter or because the writer may be unknown and from a developing country), the remoteness of the publisher (which may not have a wide reach) and ....

Ministry confirms return dates for university students

Ministry confirms return dates for university students
The Ministry of Higher Education announced that Malaysians who are studying at universities will still be returning to their campus as early as 1 March, while those who are already at their campuses should stay where they are, writes Ida Lim for the
Malay Mail.
In touching on the impact of the two-week movement control order to be imposed in six states from 12 to 26 January, the ministry said that the operations for institutes of higher education (IPT) under the ministry will remain as announced previously. This means that the earliest date for when local students are allowed to enter campuses is from 1 March, whereas the earliest entry date for international students (except from the UK) was 1 January. University students already at their campuses will be undergoing their studies through a mix of physical and online learning activities. ....

University makes relocation a vehicle for social change

University makes relocation a vehicle for social change
Once a Viking stronghold, the area encompassing Dublin 7 and Dublin 1 in the northwest inner city of the Irish capital has pockets of gentrification and even a growing collection of hipster food joints in Stoneybatter.
But much of this historically working-class part of the city suffers from high levels of homelessness and poverty.
“Fifteen years ago it was a no-go area, but now hipsters are buying houses and it’s trendy in parts,” says Pascal Derrien, who runs SPADE Enterprise Centre in Dublin 7. “But it is still dodgy – the Garda (police) station is still one of the busiest in the country.” ....
