They use maps and other calculations. we visited one firm that does all of that. since the search began, the u.s. navy aircraft have covered more than 160 u.s. knot call miles. we know we re only looking in one haystack rather than several haystacks. search maps help locate air france flight had 447 in the atlantic ocean. first, a grid that shows where the plane hit the ocean surface. two calculations for that. how far the plane could have flown and when the transponder failed and where the debris would have fallen if there was a catastrophic failure at cruising altitude. when you layer those together, you get a heat map and ....

Okay, was the turn back because they were experiencing some sort of abnormal or emergency situation that required a return back to origin? but now you couple that with the intentionally disabling of the transponders. that s not a normal act. no pilot would ever have a reason to turn off the transponder in-flight. anyone planning to disable the transponder and acars system would have to have an in-depth understanding of the aircraft. whoever altered the aircraft had to use a computer located between the pilot and co-pilot chairs in the cockpit. what are the chances that someone other than the pilot or co-pilot changed that course? reprogrammed the autopilot? to reprogram the flight management system, they d have to come forward into the cockpit. and pilot and co-pilot see someone bursting through the door and fiddling with the flight management system, they d go nuts. we know that because if ....

By a continuous moving flow. they can move a long way but hopefully they are not moving into tar. they say it s too early to send a submarine to aid in the search. even when you stick listening devices into the water, they can only listen for maybe one or two miles. you need to zero in on the debris field more. talk to us about the equipment that they would use so you can guess more intelligently as to where the actual plane is. well, if they find if they hear a ping from the transponder, they will deploy autonomous undlerwater vehicles auvs. if they locate the wreckage, they will come in with r.o.b.s, tethered vehicles that can go down and recover the black boxes hopefully. that s interesting. i ve seen some of those images ....
