A year after deadly shooting, Molson Coors has set a course for more inclusive culture — but cultivating real change will take time

A year after deadly shooting, Molson Coors has set a course for more inclusive culture but cultivating real change will take time
Sophie Carson, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
After an electrician at Molson Coors shot and killed five of his coworkers and himself last February, several employees at Milwaukee’s iconic brewery spoke up.
They told news outlets about racism they’d experienced on the job, and supervisors who didn’t seem to take meaningful action against it.
The Milwaukee Police Department said its investigation found racism likely was not the main motive of the gunman Anthony Ferrill, who was Black. He had been exhibiting paranoia and erratic behavior for about three years before the shooting.

How Molson Coors is addressing racism, diversity a year after shooting

After an electrician at Molson Coors shot and killed five of his coworkers and himself last February, several employees at Milwaukee’s iconic brewery spoke up.
They told news outlets about racism they’d experienced on the job, and supervisors who didn’t seem to take meaningful action against it.
The Milwaukee Police Department said its investigation found racism likely was not the main motive of the gunman Anthony Ferrill, who was Black. He had been exhibiting paranoia and erratic behavior for about three years before the shooting.
But as reports of a racist workplace climate surfaced including that a noose was placed on or in Ferrill’s locker five years prior  Molson Coors leadership acknowledged they had “more work to do.”

MILWAUKEE Friday marks one year since the mass shooting at Molson Coors in Milwaukee. Six people, including the gunman, died that day.
Hundreds of pages of police reports still leave one question unanswered: Why did this tragedy happen?
Witnesses and families interviewed by police said they don’t understand why the gunman killed his co-workers that day. One witness said he had some sort of issue with another one of the victims, but didn’t know what. Another said racist incidents may have played a part.
In the wake of the shooting, the company has taken time to address how it deals with incidents of racism. Molson Coors Community Affairs Director Tami Garrison said the company is working to make all employees feel welcomed.

Nearly one year later and few answers in Miller brewery shooting

Friday marks one year since a gunman opened fire and killed five co-workers at the Miller brewery in Milwaukee. The victims were Dale Hudson, Gennady Levshetz, Jesus Valle Jr., Trevor Wetselaar and Dana Walk.It s a loss their families are still feeling today.Janet Wetselaar lost her son Trevor, a powerhouse operator at Molson Coors and Navy veteran who worked on a nuclear submarine. Our entire family has been devastated, and every day and night is filled with extreme misery and sadness, she told WISN 12. It has been a very difficult year for the family without Dale and our hearts are slowly healing, Hudson s widow, Kathleen Hudson, said. For these families, time has not yet healed their deep wounds. The beermaker and its staff are still healing, too. Our employees have been incredibly resilient. I think they ve taken comfort speaking with one another, speaking with counselors. They ve shown an incredible amount of grit and determination to recover from this, Molson Coors community affairs director Tami Garison said.Molson Coors offered Friday off to all brewery workers and will have a moment of silence companywide. It also dedicated a memorial to the victims last fall. As a company, we re trying to make sure we re doing everything to support those range of emotions, Garrison said. The shooter, Anthony Ferrill, took the lives of his co-workers then turned the gun on himself. Are we any closer today to figuring out a motive for this deadly violence? WISN 12 s Hillary Mintz asked Garrison. That s a fair question, but I m not the Milwaukee Police Department, and I can t answer that question for you, Garrison said.A year later, no answers and no closure for the families something they say they may never have.Molson Coors set up a fund for the victims families which raised more than $1.8 million.
