Police say the officers were trying to stop a suspect after he shoplifted from the store last night. Thats when the suspect jumped into his car, drove off and then hit the officers. Both were taken to the hospital. One released. The other still recovering from broken bones. She is expected to survive. The two were hurt last night, it was around 8 30 here at this safeway on lewelling boulevard in san leandro. Investigators were trying to stop a shoplifter. Witnesses say he had a basket full of bottles, possibly alcohol. And he put it in his trunk when the female officer grabbed him by the waist. The subject was able to start his vehicle, put it in gear, and drive away with the officer still in the doorway of the vehicle. Both officers sustained injuries from the vehicle running them over.
