Letters: Driving cost, BHF, vaccine, training and Macmillan

Give up chocolate to help BHF
Emma Day, head of Dechox, British Heart Foundation, writes:
This March, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is encouraging the British public to take on their Dechox challenge and give up chocolate and other sugary snacks for the month of March. Dechox Warriors will help to raise life saving funds for the 7.6 million people in the UK living with heart and circulatory diseases.
A recent survey carried out by the BHF, revealed that biscuits were the UK’s favourite sugary snack (42 per cent), closely followed by chocolate (41pc).
With the findings demonstrating just how important biscuits and chocolate are to us, giving them up will be no easy feat.  ....

Government accused of 'insulting thousands of workers' over axing of union learning fund

THE government has been accused of “insulting hundreds of thousands of workers” after confirming plans to axe funding for Britain’s most successful workplace training scheme.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson refused to reconsider withdrawing £12 million granted to the Union Learning Fund (ULF) when asked in the Commons on Monday.
Unionlearn provides skills training which improves the lives and productivity of 200,000 workers a year.
It is supported by major employers such as Tesco, Heathrow airport, Tata Steel, FirstBus, CrossCountry, British Steel and Arla Foods, and administered by trade unions.
Makerfield Labour MP Yvonne Fovargue MP asked in the Commons: “Would the Secretary of State reconsider the decision to scrap this highly successful programme and fund it through the national skills programme?” ....

Threat to Harold Hill deer - Romford Recorder letters

We will fight to protect land for deer
A Romford resident, full name and address supplied, writes:
Oh deer! Once again, Havering takes the surgeon’s knife to Harold Hill.
It seems enough is NOT enough when it comes to the removal of much loved and used green space which has been a blessing to so many over the last year. It seems bursting-at-the-seams doctors’ surgeries are, in fact, not bursting at the seams and it seems, the deer population has a low cash value.
That value is packaged up as a very important parcel of land off Priory Road and a pivotal crossing point for the many wild stags and does who use it to access from the Manor to the fields around Harold Hill, driving a diversity of wildlife that is enjoyed by all residents and visitors.   ....

Letters to the Editor: Covid vaccines and Andover hospital

Dear Editor,
Why has the Day Surgery in the Andover Hospital stopped doing endoscopy and is it permanent?
There has been a great deal of time and money spent on the unit and I feel it is such a shame that the Andover people have to travel to Winchester or Basingstoke when it could be done here.
Name and address supplied
Dear Editor,
What part of ‘stay home, protect the NHS, save lives’ does Tony Barron (letters Feb 19) not understand?
Does he think that having people out and about delivering leaflets is a good enough reason NOT to adhere to Government guidance or does he think like some that the rules shouldn’t apply. ....

Campaign to save training fund before it is scrapped
Paddy Lillis, Usdaw, general secretary, writes:
Let’s stop the government scrapping the Union Learning Fund in England at the end of March.
This unique scheme provides lifelong learning in many local workplaces, bringing together employers, education providers and trade unions to give workers a second chance at learning by contributing time, money and resources.
Learning and reskilling will be core to helping us recover from the impact of Covid-19 and dealing with the changing world of work because of automation. ....
