What is Human Rights Watch’s position on sanctions?
Human Rights Watch supports the use of certain types of sanctions including targeted sanctions and travel bans, and restrictions on military, trade, financial, economic, and other relations as a means to condemn situations involving grave or widespread human rights abuses or humanitarian law violations, to assert pressure to end those abuses, to hold those responsible to account, and as a means to deter other parties from becoming complicit in abuses. The aim is to affect the actions of policymakers and perpetrators of abuses while minimizing negative effects on the general population. ....

What’s new? The Myanmar military’s 1 February coup d’état brought a sudden halt to the country’s democratic transition and showed disdain for the will of the people, overwhelmingly expressed in the November 202o elections which returned the National League for Democracy government in a landslide.
Why does it matter? The coup has arrested a decade of political and economic liberalisation. It has prompted almost universal outrage from Myanmar’s people, who have taken to streets across the country to demand its reversal. The military is unlikely to back down, and the risk of deadly violence against protesters is high. ....

YANGON The State Administrative Council led by coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has amended the country’s high treason and sedition laws in an attempt to guarantee impunity for the Myanmar military leaders who seized power in a coup two weeks ago.
The council amended sections 121, 124 and 505 of the colonial-era Penal Code, which define high treason and sedition. ....
