New York state is enticing vaccine holdouts to get their shots, but not localities Primary care physicians are seen as the "ace in the hole" Edward Manners exited the Hornell Community Arts Center on June 1, secured his face mask and headed to his car in the municipal parking lot. Manners was taking his first steps toward normalcy after receiving his second dose of the two-shot Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at the center’s walk-in vaccination clinic. Fully vaccinated (once he's gone through a two-week waiting period following his final dose), Manners looked ahead. “I just wanted to get back to normal. I made my decision,” said Manners, a middle-aged, wiry-framed trucker who received his first shot May 4 in Hornell.
The Leader CORNING - If the court of public opinion is any indication, residents of the Corning area would like to see Market Street open to pedestrians (and close to traffic) at some point this summer —- but some businesses aren't so quick to agree. An online petition titled 'Bring back pedestrian friendly Market Street,' asking the city to revive the 2020 plan, has received almost 3,000 e-signatures. The petition cites a multitude of factors for the pedestrian-friendly street being a good idea, including safe outdoor spaces due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, additional space for certain businesses, and adding to the experience of Corning.

Although the Corning City Council didn’t formally have that on their agenda last night, WENY-TV reports one business owner brought it up. Vincent Azzarelli, who owns the VOLO Bar on Market Street, pushed for returning the street to pedestrian-only. You may recall a section was closed off last year to traffic, allowing for restaurants to expand their outdoor dining areas. It’s similar to the Aurora ‘Streatery’ in Ithaca, which re-opened last week for the second straight year. Azzarelli has a petition with nearly three thousand signatures, all in favor of closing Market Street.

Despite the decline, officials say it's important for people to remain vigilant. "Presence of this variant does not change the need to wear your mask, socially distance, stay home while sick and wash your hands," county Director of Public Information Vincent Azzarelli said. The first reported case of U.K. variant was identified by New York state on Jan. 4 in Saratoga County. Since then, cases have been confirmed in several counties in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, including Tompkins, Broome, Allegany and Delaware. Statewide, the number of active cases and hospitalizations for COVID-19 continue to drop, although there are concerns the U.K. variant could fuel a new wave of the virus in the coming weeks and months.
