The Biden administration rescinded a number of Trump-era executive orders Wednesday that sought to ban Chinese-made social media apps, such as TikTok and WeChat, from the U.S. over national security concerns - specifically the amount of personal data that these apps collect on American citizens.
In a new executive order published Wednesday, President Joe Biden ordered the U.S. Department of Commerce to conduct a larger review of Chinese-made applications to determine what data these apps may collect on U.S. citizens and whether that information is shared with China s government.
The new Biden executive order also reverses U.S. bans on eight other Chinese-made apps that former President Donald Trump announced in January just before he left office. ....

US revokes Trump executive orders that sought to ban TikTok, WeChat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) —  President Joe Biden on Wednesday withdrew a series of executive orders that sought to ban new downloads of WeChat and TikTok, and ordered a Commerce Department review of security concerns posed by those apps.
The administration of former President Donald Trump had attempted to block new users from downloading the apps and ban other technical transactions that Chinese-owned TikTok and WeChat both said would effectively block the apps use in the United States. The courts blocked those orders, which never took effect.
A separate U.S. national security review of TikTok launched in late 2019 remains ongoing, a White House official said, declining to offer any details. The White House remains very concerned about the data risks of TikTok users, another administration official told reporters. ....

Why WeChat, Given Reprieve By Biden Administration, is China's Most Controversial App

Why WeChat, Given Reprieve By Biden Administration, is China s Most Controversial App
On 6/9/21 at 5:23 PM EDT
The Biden administration announced Wednesday that it will reverse a Trump-era executive order banning Chinese apps like TikTok and WeChat to conduct its own evidence-based analysis of the potential security risks of using the apps.
OnShore Security CEO Stel Valavanis told Newsweek that he believes Biden s approach is more nuanced than his predecessor because Biden is taking the time to build a case around these apps instead of a heavy-handed outright ban.
Biden s announcement Wednesday noted that the Department of Commerce will make recommendations on how to further protect American s personal data and will address the risk of apps connected to China. ....
