incredibly wet night, through the overnight hours, and potentially 1 to 2 1/2 inches of rain. this really could be in georgia, macon, atlanta, one of the wettest years on record, at least the top eight or so. but then, by tomorrow morning, you can see washington, raleigh, annapolis, baltimore, the wet weather moves in. but just a rainmaker. temperatures way too mild to have it be snow. by sunday night, even in boston and new york, temperatures in the 40s, so it won't be snow. a little bit of cold air up here, though. and that's where maybe the ski resorts, of bramleigh, whiteface, upstate new york, western new york, they could see a few inches of snow, but the cities will not. here's a look at how much, again. this is kind of the big winter is maine, because the cold air is in place, and then here comes that moisture. that's not happening in the big cities along the eastern sea board. the moisture is in, but the cold air is a day late. here's how cold. temperatures today 48 in new york city, 58 in charlotte. watch the cold air, minneapolis, high temperature 40 below, all

robinson joining us now. he's a pulitzer prize winner with the "washington post." and steve karnaky also joins us from salon.com. let me ask you about that comment. i thought that was a great exchange between david gregory and orrin hatch the other day, gene. i mean this guy is the finance director of the republican national committee. and there you have a senator from utah just saying he's some kid over there at the rnc. i'm not responsible for him when he puts out this whiteface on barack obama, and they're trying to walk away from it. >> yeah, i think it illustrates the disarray that the republican party is in right now, ironically, at a time when the party is actually doing quite well compared to the democrats in terms of making gains, at least in party registration and in the polls. but it's a mess. who's in charge?

a lot of the senior officials -- the senior official republicans in congress don't have much regard for the rnc that michael steele is running. and don't consider themselves to answer to what's happening over there. i guess chairman steele doesn't exactly take responsibility for the whiteface ad either. so, who's doing it? >> well, there's that ethnic piece, and also this larger question. the republicans are doing very well in the polls as the no party. people are unhappy with the economy, unhappy with the direction of the country right now. so republicans are benefiting in terms of poll numbers. but then when you get to the reality of the republican party, you get sticky business. sarah palin is a polarizer. a lot of people think she's nowhere near the weight of what you have to be to be presidential material, and others who think she's just dandy. it seems there's a difference between how popular they have become because of the unpopularity of the democrats, and yet they're not ready for primetime.
