In some ways, the special election next Tuesday in Ohio’s deep-red 15th Congressional District has come to be viewed as an early test of former President Donald Trump’s prevailing influence within the GOP.
The crowded Republican primary in the suburbs of southern Columbus is pitting a Trump-backed former energy lobbyist, Mike Carey, against Jeff LaRe, a state legislator endorsed by the moderate former incumbent, Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH), who vacated his seat in mid-May to lead the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

Republican Rep. Jeff LaRe launches campaign for 15th District special election

Ohio state Rep. Jeff LaRe officially launched his campaign Monday for the 15th District special election to replace Rep. Steve Stivers later this year.
LaRe, R-Violet Township, was appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives in 2019. LaRe, a former Fairfield County sheriff's deputy, said he's running to improve safety.
"It's about safety for me," LaRe, now an executive vice president for security contractor The Whitestone Group, said in an interview. "Safety not just for our families, for our communities, for the security of our businesses."
LaRe would like to tackle several issues in that vein: the opioid crisis and flow of drugs across the border, helping businesses regain their footing after the pandemic and improving public safety – both by reining in protests that result in property damage and setting standards for police officers.
