The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has unveiled a China-funded reference laboratory at its headquarters in Ethiopia, creating another milestone for China's health diplomacy. The Dr Wu Lien-teh Laboratory, named after the Chinese-Malaysian epidemiologist who helped eradicate the plague in Manchuria in 1911, aims to address gaps in laboratory systems in Africa. The 2022 Wakley–Wu Lien Teh Prize invited submissions sharing ideas of “a heart full of great compassion and empathy” in modern Chinese clinical practice.1 We are pleased and grateful to have received 187 submissions—twice the number of submissions in 2021—telling touching and provocative stories about all aspects of medical practice in China. Essays were shortlisted by two editors at The Lancet Group and anonymised essays were sent to external advisers in China for their reflections and thoughts.
