The section on capital projects in the 2020 edition of Harvard’s annual “Town Gown Report” to the City of Cambridge in recent years chock-full of construction work planned or in progress, thanks to The Harvard Campaign and continuing programs like House renewal suddenly reflects a far narrower pipeline. Beyond the second and third stages of the
Adams House renewal, nothing is on the horizon. This reflects both Harvard’s rotation toward Allston and the severe reduction in capital spending in response to the pandemic’s financial impact. The Eliot and Kirkland House renewals now look unlikely before late in the decade. Similarly, the projection of faculty members based in Cambridge shown in the 2019 report as 2,100 to 2,200 for the year 2024 is now 2,000 to 2,200 for 2025. “All right,” says David Kolesky, Ph.D. ’16. “The moment of truth.” As many times as he’s done this, there’s still always that pause. Wearing blue latex gloves and a white lab coat, Kolesky is about to see what the morning’s work has yielded. In front of him on a glass slide is a two-inch chip maybe a quarter-inch deep that he and two lab-mates spent the past few hours making: a translucent rectangle filled with a gelatinous mix of proteins and fibers mimicking the body’s extracellular matrix, the molecules that give support to living cells. And snaking through the middle of it, invisible for the moment, two tiny tubular structures, each a hundred microns or so in diameter (about the width of a human hair) both produced on the massive black 3-D printer standing a few feet away. One of those tubes, the straighter of the two, will be transformed into a working blood vessel. The other will become something called a proximal tubule, a ....

These 3D-Printed Fish Bots Can Swarm and School


Researchers have made a smart school of robotic fish that swarm and swim just like the real deal, and they offer promising insights into how developers can improve decentralized, autonomous operations for other gizmos like self-driving vehicles and robotic space explorers. Also, they’re just pretty stinking cute.

These seven 3D-printed robots, or Bluebots, can synchronize their movements to swim in a group, or Blueswarm, without any outside control, per research published in Science Robotics this month from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.
Equipped with two wide-angle cameras for eyes, each bot navigates their tank by tracking the LEDs lights on their peers. Based on the cues they observe, each robot reacts accordingly using an onboard Raspberry Pi computer and custom algorithm to gauge distance, direction, and heading. ....
