We already knew that Mechagodzilla would be popping up in
Godzilla vs. Kong—check him outin toy form—but the latest teaser hyping the movie’s March 31 bow on HBO Max gives us a glimmer of his robotically glowing orbs...via his archrival Godzilla’s giant peeper. Feast your
own eyes and see for yourself:
Neon, underwater battles, lots of monstrous snarling and bellowing, some shots of worried-looking human characters we can’t really be bothered to care about, and...yep, there it is, captured with a lingering pause to make sure we don’t miss it.
That arrival should make things interesting for the two “alpha titans” who’ve already got their names in the movie title.

Godzilla vs. Kong has been out for nearly a week at this point, but even then, you were likely enough to have already gotten glimpses of the film’s “twist” well beforehand—and not through leaks, but in either keeping up with the film’s marketing or walking down a toy aisle in Target. A surprise to be sure, but for director Adam Wingard, it was part of a long history of dealing with the Hollywood machine.

By now then, you probably know that
Godzilla vs. Kong’s titular matchup is not the endgame of the movie—part of the reason the titans have been brought together on an international scale is through the manipulation of the seedy cybernetics company Apex, headlined by Demián Bichir’s villain, Walter Simmons. By studying Godzilla and harnessing energies from both the remnants of Ghidorah and the “Hollow Earth” that Titan life emanates from in the first place, Apex has constructed humanity’s own Titan in the form of Mechagodzilla, an homage to the classic robotic foe from Toho’s long line of Kaiju movies.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League—proving once and for all that if a fanbase is loud enough and pushy enough, they can make any ridiculous dream a reality (provided their dream coincides with a movie studio feeling an overwhelming sense of desperation over how much Content is available on its new streaming platform). The point is: They did it. It worked. They tweeted enough hashtags and got in enough people’s replies and made so much noise that Warner Bros. decided that it actually made sense to throw millions and millions of dollars at shutting them up (but in a nice way). Fascinating backroom politics circa WWII are undermined by banal marital melodrama in Danish director Christina Rosendahl’s “The Good Traitor,” resulting in a so-so period drama that raises more questions than it answers. The film centers on the life of diplomat-gone-rogue Henrik Kauffmann (Ulrich Thomsen, stoic), who was posted to Washington, D.C., as Danish Ambassador in 1939. When the Nazis occupy Denmark on April 9, 1940, Kauffmann declares himself the only true representative of the free Danish people and goes on to make a number of high-risk autonomous decisions that, in the long run, help to free his homeland. Unfortunately, the details of Kauffmann’s wheeling and dealing are continually undercut by the film’s concentration on his rather unusual personal life, rendered here in trite narrative clichés.
