FREDERICK, Md. — A Frederick County Circuit Court judge on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old man to 15 years behind bars with all but four suspended on assault and hate crime charges.
Last February 15, then 17-year-old Corey Robert Welch was at a house party in the 6900 Block of Meadowlake Road in New Market, when he made anti-gay remarks to someone else at the party
While that person was outside waiting to be picked up by a ride-share to leave the party, prosecutors say Welch and another individual named Martin Geiser began attacking him. ....

Supervisors sued for $7.5M for denying third solar facility

WINCHESTER Hollow Road Solar LLC, National Fruit Orchards Inc. and Diane Holmes are suing the Frederick County Board of Supervisors for denying a conditional-use permit for a utility-scale solar power generating facility in Gore.
The lawsuit, filed in Frederick County Circuit Court last month, seeks a court order for the supervisors to approve the CUP. The lawsuit also states the plaintiffs are entitled to a redress in the amount of $7.5 million.
On March 10, the supervisors voted 6-1 to deny the CUP. Had the permit been approved, it would have been the third solar facility approved by the supervisors within the past year. Supervisors J. Douglas McCarthy, Shawn Graber, Blaine Dunn, Bob Wells, David Stegmaier and Judith McCann-Slaughter voted against the permit. Board Chairman Charles DeHaven Jr. voted in favor of it. ....

A judge in Virginia ordered a permanent ban on accepting ballots without postmarks after Election Day.
In a consent order dated January 13, 2021, signed by Judge William W. Eldridge IV, Presiding Judge of the Frederick County Circuit Court, the Virginia Board of Elections agreed to revise their regulations to bring them into compliance with Virginia law.
The lawsuit was brought by Frederick County Electoral Board member Thomas Reed. According to a statement from the attorney in the case, “This consent decree gives Mr. Reed everything he requested – a permanent ban on accepting ballots without postmarks after Election Day, and is a loss for the Virginia bureaucrats who said ballots could come in without these protections.” ....

Driver convicted in police pursuit


The driver in an up to 100 mph, multi-county chase who drove the wrong way on a highway ramp and struck two state police cruisers on June 13 has admitted guilt.
In a plea bargain on Tuesday in Frederick County Circuit Court, Bryan Douglas Walters pleaded guilty to eluding police. A driving with a suspended license charge was dropped as part of the agreement.
The agreement also calls for Walters to be sentenced in Warren County Circuit Court at 9 a.m. on Jan. 15. Walters, 34, of the 600 block of West Main Street in Luray, faces an eluding charge and two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer in Warren County. ....
