TORONTO — The Maple Leafs will get nothing in return for Zach Hyman when he hits the open market on Wednesday. And general manager Kyle Dubas can live with that.
According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, Hyman is set to sign a long-term deal with the Edmonton Oilers when free agency officially begins next week. Dubas had subsequently been engaged with Oilers’ GM Ken Holland on a sign-and-trade that would have allowed Hyman to ink a max-term eight-year deal with Edmonton.
But Dreger reported on Saturday those talks proved fruitless. Dubas and the Leafs placed a high value on the cap savings that eighth year would bring Edmonton, and the Oilers weren’t willing to meet their expectations.

The San Jose Sharks acquired young goaltenderAdin Hill a few days ago, giving them a potential answer in net for the 2021-22 season. Hill has shown plenty of promise in his limited experience, including a .913 save percentage in 19 appearances this year. It’s hard to turn the keys over to a 25-year-old netminder with just 49 games under his belt though, so the Sharks are still looking for a veteran netminder for next season, according to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic.
What does that mean for Martin Jones, a veteran who is already under contract? It seems likely, as Kurz suggests, that Jones has played his last game for the Sharks. The 31-year-old goaltender is still signed for three more seasons and carries a $5.75M cap hit but has played so poorly that he is a prime candidate for a buyout. In 137 appearances since the start of the 2018-19 season, Jones has posted a .896 save percentage, still somehow going 68-53-11 in the process. The fact that he had a winning record last season even on the struggling Sharks suggests that perhaps if they improve the goaltending situation there are better days ahead for this San Jose roster.

The Seattle Kraken will select 30 players during the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft presented by Upper Deck on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; ESPN2, SN1, SN NOW).
The Kraken must choose one player from each of the 30 participating teams (the Vegas Golden Knights are exempt), including at least 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies. Additionally, at least 20 of their selections must already be under contract for next season, with an aggregate value of at least 60 percent ($48.9 million) of the $81.5 million NHL salary cap.

Though we will soon find out which players will form the bulk of the inaugural Kraken roster (the Golden Knights had 18 expansion draft players on their opening night roster), we asked five NHL.com writers to identify the one player each believes is the must-draft candidate.

The Seattle Kraken are expected to select Florida Panthers goaltender Chris Driedger in next week's expansion draft and sign him to a new contract, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.
All signs point to the Seattle Kraken signing and selecting pending UFA goalie Chris Driedger from the Florida Panthers as part of the expansion draft process, sources say. @TSNHockey@TheAthletic— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) July 17, 2021
Driedger is slated to become an unrestricted free agent later this month, but the Kraken will have exclusive negotiating rights if they select him.
