City of Logan has strengthened its reputation as a green and sustainable city by acquiring a key parcel of koala habitat for conservation. Worldwide, around 50 million people have dementia, with that number expected to triple by 2050, says Flinders University Caring Futures Institute researcher Professor Lily Xiao, who is also leading the rollout of the iSupport self-help online project around Australia. The project has received a $400,000 grant from the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations, an Australian Government initiative aiming to strengthen understanding and engagement between Australia and China. /Public Release. Date Time Flexible brains make for right fit Being squeezable may be the key to finding space for the brain in mammals, including humans, according to new research. An international study, co-led by Flinders University’s Dr Vera Weisbecker, has revealed that marsupial mammals like possums, kangaroos, and wombats appear to have a lot of flexibility when it comes to accommodating their brains into their skulls. “The brain is one of the heaviest parts of the head, particularly in smaller mammals. But it needs to be placed in a way that doesn’t interfere with the many vital functions of the head, such as seeing, hearing, smelling and of course feeding,” says Dr. Weisbecker.
Date Time Poor brain cancer survival outcomes on rise A first of its kind Australian study has revealed rates of brain lymphoma have quadrupled since the 1980s with only 33% of people surviving 5 years after receiving a diagnosis. Brain lymphoma is a Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in which cancer cells from lymph tissue form in the brain or spinal cord. As the human eye is connected to the brain, the lymphoma can also start in the eye (retinal lymphoma) and later spread to the brain. First author of the study published in the journal Cancers, Dr Alexandra Farrall at Flinders University, says the results showed increasing brain cancer rates in both elderly and younger Australian adults, and much lower survival outcomes than those reported for lymphoma that occurs outside the brain.
Date Time New Hospital School for Children in North Children who are patients at the Lyell McEwin Hospital can now go to school there, with the State’s newest school campus opening within the hospital in time for the 2021 school year. Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade said children with acute and chronic health and mental health needs at the Lyell McEwin Hospital will be able to attend lessons run by the Hospital School SA program. “We know that any hospital visit is a stressful time for families, let alone having the added stress on parents who might have to try and ‘home school’ their children while they’re at hospital,” Minister Wade said.
VIC Premier Victorians now have 450 extra train services every week, as the biggest timetable change since the opening of the City Loop comes into place from today. The Andrews Labor Government has added 280 metropolitan and 170 regional services to the network every week, alongside new capacity indicator technology that will give passengers on Melbourne’s trains access to information about how busy their train or station will be – helping people stay safe as we move through our recovery from the pandemic. After four months of extensive testing and trials, the new online tool called RideSpace provides real-time information for passengers on metropolitan trains – showing them how busy, or quiet, their journey will be before they get on board.
