Cancer survivors' high risk of cardiac failure

Date Time
Cancer survivors’ high risk of cardiac failure
Mortality among people with cancer who survive at least five years after diagnosis is higher than for the general population, particularly in terms of cardiovascular disease-related mortality, according to research published today in the Medical Journal of Australia.
Research led by Flinders University Professor Bogda Koczwara, a medical oncologist and senior staff specialist at the Flinders Medical Centre, analysed South Australian Cancer Registry data for all people diagnosed with cancer during 1990-1999 and alive five years after diagnosis, with follow-up to 31 December 2016.
Analysis of 32,646 people with cancer alive five years after diagnosis found:

Better technique to speed up pain research

Photo: Pixabay
Scientists have for the first time established a sensory neuron model able to mass-reproduce two key sensory neuron types involved in pain sensation, enabling the easy generation of large numbers of the cells to fast-track chronic pain research.
In research applications usually sensory neurons need to be isolated from animals. They represent a wide variety of different cell types, making it difficult to collect and isolate large quantities of pain sensing neurons.
Using a new technique, researchers at Flinders University have found a way to reproduce millions of the cells, providing ample resources for the simultaneous testing of thousands of samples or potential drug libraries.

PTSD link to pandemic fears

Photo: Getty Images
Even at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, people around the world became more fearful of what could happen to them or their family.
A new Flinders University study of 1040 online participants from five western countries published in PLOS ONE explores people’s response to the stresses of the escalating pandemic, finding more than 13% of the sample had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related symptoms consistent with levels necessary to qualify for a clinical diagnosis.
With ongoing economic and social fallout, and death toll of more than 2 million, the team of psychology researchers warn more needs to be done to cope with the potential short and long-term spike in PTSD cases resulting from the pandemic – as well as related mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, psychosocial functioning, etc.

COVID-19 lockdowns increase meth exposure risks

Date Time
COVID-19 lockdowns increase meth exposure risks
Families could be suffering from inhalation and skin exposure risks as meth moves from gyprock into air particles.
Families unwittingly living in houses used as methamphetamine labs could be exposed to significantly higher levels of the drug ice during Covid-19 lockdowns, as financial pressures brought on by the pandemic prevent relocation and limit resources available for environmental health agencies tackling the problem.
In a new study, Flinders University researchers Emma Kuhn, Dr Jackie Wright, Associate Professor Stewart Walker, Dr Harriet Whiley and Associate Professor Kirstin Ross analysed the public health challenges facing environmental health agencies investigating methamphetamine contamination in houses during the Covid-19 pandemic.
