MARTA Seeks Public Feedback About Atlanta Streetcar's East Extension Project


Heather Alhadeff, assistant general manager for planning for MARTA, says more than 250 people attended a virtual meeting to hear the transit agency’s plans about extending the Atlanta Streetcar.
Alhadeff, a guest on Tuesday’s edition of “Closer Look,” told show host Rose Scott that the east extension project is slated to be completed by 2027.
The $149 million project will extend the Atlanta Streetcar between Edgewood Avenue and south of Ponce de Leon Avenue onto the BeltLine.
“The beauty about the BeltLine project in its original vision was always envisioned to have transit as well as bike and pedestrian facilities,” Alhadeff said. ....

Flush with federal stimulus cash and angling for more, planners in Atlanta will explore alignment for a potential rail transit connection to the Beltline.

Josh Green reports that the Board of Directors for MARTA recently voted to authorize $500,000 to study the feasibility of extending the Atlanta Streetcar system into the BeltLine corridor.
According to Green the feasibility study will improve the chance of federal cash helping to foot the bill for light-rail transit along the Atlanta BeltLine. MARTA received $284 million in the latest round of COVID-19 rescue funds. In all, MARTA has received $331 million in federal aid during the pandemic. ....

For 10 years prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, each weekday morning, Jeremy Wilhelm walked from his house in Grant Park to the King Memorial MARTA station.
There, he caught a train to Five Points and then walked another few blocks to his job in a Marietta Street office tower. In fact, when he and his wife were shopping for a house, their top requirement was being within walking distance of MARTA, says Wilhelm, a project manager and analyst at Westat.
Then, the coronavirus showed up, and Wilhelm’s office shut down. He’s been working out of his living room since March 2020 and expects to do so indefinitely. His wife, Holly, used to commute by MARTA, too, riding the train up to Buckhead. Her job as an aptitude consultant for the Johnson O’Connor Research Foundation requires her to be in the office a couple of days a ....
