Its decision drew plaudit from the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Middle Belt Forum (MBF), Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and civil society organisations. A cross-section of Nigerians had in the last few weeks opposed the nomination of Onochie on the basis that she is a card-carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in her home state, Delta and, therefore, called on the Senate to reject her nomination.

Buhari’s media adviser, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement that announced the appointments, named tested insurgency war general, Maj. Gen. Lucky Irabor as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS); Maj.
