It was shovels up and dirt down for the ceremonial planting of the first of a thousand Japanese maple trees at the University of Illinois, Springfield Tuesday the trees a gift from Gale Myers of Davidson’s Japanese Maples in New Berlin.
As Myers nears retirement, the donation is her way to show appreciation for UIS’s Study Away Program, which has enabled her to study at Springfield’s “sister city,” Ashikaga, Japan.
Johnathan GoldbergBelle is the program’s director. “So, we’re looking at a celebration, really, of the relationship between Ashikaga.”
Myers’ gift is a donation that will be appreciated for decades to come. The goal is to have all one thousand Japanese maples in the ground by the end of summer. ....

COVID-19 vaccine in Illinois: Is a vaccine mandate legal?


As more COVID-19 vaccines become available, public health officials and politicians are hard at work convincing people to get the shots in the arm to help return life to normal.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and one of President Joe Biden’s most trusted experts on COVID-19, has said at least 75% of Americans will need to be vaccinated for the nation to reach herd immunity. Herd immunity is the point when enough people are immune to a virus that the societal spread stops or is extremely limited.
Officials have said reaching herd immunity through vaccination is the key to returning to pre-pandemic life. However, a recent Associated Press poll revealed only 67% of Americans have gotten or are planning to get the vaccine, leaving the country short of herd immunity. Fifteen percent said they will not be getting vaccinated while 17% said they probably won’t.   ....

Jason Noyes Named 2020 UIS Employee Of The Year

Information Technology Service’s Help Desk Manager Jayson Noyes has been named the 2020 Employee of the Year at the University of Illinois Springfield. He was honored during a virtual reception on February 2, 2021.
Before announcing the winner, UIS Interim Chancellor Karen Whitney thanked the eleven Employees of the Month who were nominated for the award.
Noyes, who was the May 2020 Employee of the Month, is described as always going “above and beyond” each and every day to help students, faculty and staff. As Help Desk manager, he manages a team of student workers who typically respond to computer and other technical issues seven days a week. ....
