A rare 2,000-year-old statue looted from an archaeological site in Libya has been returned to the country’s authorities after it was seized near Heathrow Airport and identified by the British Museum as an important example of ancient Greek sculpture.
The pristine marble carving of the goddess Persephone is thought to have been illegally excavated in 2012 from the ruins of Cyrene, a port established by the ancient Greeks on the Mediterranean coast of present-day eastern Libya, amid the chaotic aftermath of the overthrow of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
