Put democracy back in the hands of everyday citizens
When my mother was born, in 1919, she was a citizen who didn’t have the right to vote. My sister and I were the first females in my immediate family who were born with the right to vote in our own country. My mother believed that every American who is eligible to do so should vote in their local, regional and federal election cycles as soon as they reached eligible age. American history has shown us that many citizens have not been allowed to vote because of their race, gender, disability or even age. Our present election system does not facilitate a problem-free voting process for many. ....

TOPEKA Senate and House Republicans flexed political muscle Monday to override Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of two election bills touted by advocates as essential to fair and transparent elections and by critics as a voter-suppression tactic.
After securing two-thirds majorities in the House chamber for House Bill 2332 and House Bill 2183, both were forwarded to the Senate for completion of the process to reverse the governor. The GOP’s large majorities in both chambers came together to thwart Kelly’s attempt to derail the bills.
“We want to have fair, safe and transparent elections,” said Sen. Larry Alley, a Winfield Republican filling the role of Senate majority leader. “That gives people confidence in our election system.” ....

An increasing large number of lobbyists and outside groups in America all have a similar target: Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
And it’s understandable why. In a Senate where Democrats hold the slimmest of majorities a vote by Manchin, the most conservative Senate Democrat, can decide whether legislation is signed into law or left to meander in political purgatory in Congress.
Manchin has also demonstrated a willingness to buck the majority of the party on priority proposals and key votes. He was one of the first senators to oppose Neera Tanden’s nomination to direct the Office of Management and Budget. He has vehemently resisted the idea of changes to the filibuster. He was also early out of the gate in opposing a minimum wage increase as part of Joe Biden’s $1.9tn stimulus bill. ....

'Dark money' topped $1 billion in 2020, largely boosting Democrats • OpenSecrets

The 2020 election saw more than $1 billion in “dark money” spending at the federal level, a massive sum driven by an explosion of secret donations boosting Democrats in a historically expensive cycle.
That’s according to an estimate from OpenSecrets. The billion-dollar sum includes a whopping $660 million in donations from opaque political nonprofits and shell companies to outside groups. In 2020, dark money groups preferred to bankroll closely-tied super PACs rather than spend the money themselves politically active nonprofits that do not disclose their donors reported roughly $88 million in direct election spending to the Federal Election Commission. The remainder of the total is made up of spending on “issue ads” targeting candidates online ....
