Oregon to nearly double vaccine eligibility — despite availability woes

SALEM — Over 1 million more people will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccines in the next two upcoming eligibility phases, state officials said on Tuesday, March 16.
The groups to be added on March 29 and May 1 will nearly double the number of people eligible for vaccination. Like most states, Oregon is already struggling with the gap between vaccine eligibility and availability.
To date, there has only been enough vaccine available to inoculate less than half of the approximately 1.36 million Oregonians already eligible.
There are an estimated 2.8 million adults in Oregon out of a population of just under 4.3 million.
The numbers for the next eligibility groups have not been announced, but were provided by the Oregon Health Authority in response to a query by EO Media Group. OHA Director Pat Allen was scheduled to testify on the status of the state’s vaccination program on Wednesday, March 18, before the House Subcommittee on COVID-19. ....

Dems flex political muscle with $1.9 trillion stimulus bill

The third COVID-19 relief package, the American Rescue Plan Act, survived Congress and became law on March 10, which marks the first legislative victory for President Joe Biden. Not one Republican in either the House of Representatives or the Senate voted for the legislation.
The new $1.9 trillion stimulus package will increase payments to families while financing the reopening of schools as the return to normalcy grows nearer by the day.
Biden has directed states to have vaccines available to every American by the beginning of May, which the White House says will help the U.S. return to normal by July 4. To have a majority of American adults vaccinated by May, the administration is planning to reach more isolated areas and set up additional sites for receiving the vaccine, such as pharmaceutical stores. ....

CAL THOMAS: Now come the taxes

As mentioned in previous columns, the federal government does not lack revenue; it lacks self-control when it comes to spending. Some Democrats are even talking about the return of earmarks, those add-ons to legislation that Republicans voted to ban when they had a House majority. Democrats think they can revive them to tempt GOP members into going along with their spending plans.
Unrestrained by a Republican majority in either house of Congress, or a Republican president, Democrats have the votes to push legislation through, at least until the 2022 election, showing little concern for voter anger. It doesn’t matter to them that the Trump tax cuts produced tremendous economic results for businesses that then create jobs and hire workers. Democrats cling to the false notion that more spending and higher taxes solve everything. If it did, would it not have by now? ....
