Today's New Albums: Chris Thile, Liz Phair, Goose, Billy Gibbons, JFJO & More

Chris Thile presents a truly solo album,
Laysongs, on which his voice and mandolin are the sole contributors. Released by Nonesuch Records, the album contains six originals, including “Salt (in the Wounds) of the Earth,” a three-part suite inspired by C.S. Lewis’
The Screwtape Letters, and three covers and was co-produced by Thile’s wife, Claire Coffee. “[Coffee] has incredible taste and narrative intuition,” Thile said. “She was able to help me weave the original and non-original material together.” Engineer Jody Elff recorded
Laysongs with Thile at Future-Past, a recording studio in Upstate New York built inside an old church. The album’s content was informed by Thile’s Christian upbringing, spurred by Nonesuch’s Chairman Emeritus Bob Hurwitz, who told Thile he, “should do a God-themed record of some kind, it’s all over [Thile’s] work.” ....

Like most musicians in 2020, Reed Mathis found himself with time on his hands being that all of his tours and session work had been cancelled for the foreseeable future. Never one to idle, Reed turned attention to his archives, dusting off countless hours of audio from
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, the Tulsa, OK-based band that he helped found and performed with for nearly 15 years. First and foremost, among his discoveries was Winterwood Mathis final studio recording with JFJO. The album was never officially released seeing as he departed the band shortly after its completion in 2008. And so, the downtime gave Mathis the impetus to remix the sessions, which had been lying dormant for 12 years. In addition, Reed combed through countless hours of JFJO live recordings, compiling four new live albums from what many fans consider the band s golden years: 2005-2008. Once completed, Mathi ....

Listen • 3:17
Garage A Trois with Charlie Hunter (left), Skerik (center), and Stanton Moore (right) reconvene for Cool Down Cologne.
Saxophonist Skerik has a sound and spirit that impacts live audiences almost instantly. Drawing inspiration from Pink Floyd, Dizzy Gillespie and Jimmy Smith, he isn t afraid to engage the crowd with a blistering instrumental passage or a humorous outburst.
During the pandemic, he s kept this energy before music fans on a series of livestreams and now, a new album from one of his most notable partnerships, Garage A Trois.
Skerik, guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer Stanton Moore first formed Garage A Trois (aka GAT) in New Orleans in 1998. The group s groove-driven, take-no-prisoners style has made them a fan favorite for over 20 years. ....

Mike Dillon, Shoot the Moon, Suitcase Man, 1918 (three albums) (Royal Potato Family)

OffBeat Magazine
The pandemic affects people in different ways, causing some to turn inward and relive their personal history; others to get politically engaged or just plain angry. And sometimes it prompts musicians to create a lot of music, using the non-gigging time to branch out and push boundaries. All three of those tendencies are evident on this simultaneously-released trio of albums by Mike Dillon each one considerably different, but the three add up to an impressive statement.
Shoot the Moon is the most mainstream of the three. Fully produced with a handful of guests, it bears out Dillon’s most expansive musical ideas. As the ad-hoc band name suggests, punk, funk and psychedelia are all in the mix but so is some twisted blues, a bit of prog here, a dab of Beefheart there. Each track shuffles the deck a different way: sometimes the sound is dense and chaotic, as on the foreboding “Camus Sound Asleep,” and sometimes more playful. Despite the forbidding title, ....
