As the sun sets on 2020, I am not going to add my two cents of wisdom to the many commentators that have tried to capture the myriad of peoples’ experiences during the pandemic. Suffice to say it has been a once in a generation if not a once in a lifetime experience for most. While we look forward to the New Year with hope, our sympathies lie with the many that have suffered loss during 2020.
For the team in the Consulate it has been an honour and privilege to serve Ireland especially at a time when our citizens were at their most vulnerable. Looking back on a year of compliance with social distance norms, we are proud to have been “open for business” and providing a service to citizens throughout 2020. If one man could claim responsibility for affluent Asians’ growing passion for yachting and the sea, that might well be Mike Simpson.
His tall figure has been a well-recognised presence around the typhoon shelter ever since he berthed his yacht alongside the Aberdeen Marina Club almost 40 years ago. In those days, Mike Simpson was a one-man-band, living aboard his boat, meeting fellow sailors and occasionally, over a beer or two, selling them a yacht. Now he heads one of Asia’s leading yacht-sales, charter and management companies, with a team of almost 100 based in 12 locations across the region, from Bali to Taiwan. Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has cited “continued uncertainty regarding international border openings” amid the coronavirus pandemic in its decision to cancel the 2021 Rolex China Sea Race, which had been due to start on 31 March.
In a statement, RHKYC Commodore Denis Martinet, said: “We are of course very disappointed having already postponed this blue ribbon event last year.
“We felt that the situation would have improved sufficiently by March 2021. Yet this is not to be and we feel that it is prudent to cancel.
“The club will nevertheless endeavour to organise an independent race around the same dates in full compliance with any restrictions in place. ....

Liberty Bitcoin Youth Foiling World Cup: Building sailing's future together

69F Sailing and Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club officially organize the Liberty Bitcoin Youth Foiling World Cup, an event dedicated to mixed Under-25 crews from all over the world: the first edition will be held in three stages over 12 months, with the first two scheduled in Italy and the third in Hong Kong.
The event was born as an international synergy between 69F Sailing, the company that designed and produced the Persico 69F, the first class of foil crew boats in the world, and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. The first stage of the Liberty Bitcoin Youth Foiling World Cup takes place in Gaeta, in partnership with the Yacht Club Gaeta from February 24 to March 12, 2021. Preceded by two days of training, the event includes the Open Ceremony on February 26: the calendar includes a warmup regatta, the qualification series (3 - 8 March) and the final (10 - 12 March). ....
