South Korean Military to Provide Soldiers with Meatless Meals

The South Korean Ministry of Defense recently announced that it will provide customized meatless meals to vegetarian and Muslim enlistees. As of February 2021, enlistees will be asked to mark if they are vegetarian when they take their physical exams—columns marked “vegetarian” in both English and Korean will be available on the exam form. The information will be then sent to the military unit the enlistees will serve so it can provide them with meatless meals. 
Customized menus
“As soon as we identify the number of vegetarian and Muslim soldiers next year, we will develop customized menus,” a military source said. Main meals will include foods such as tofu, vegetables, salads, cereals, and vegetarian bibimbap. Currently, two soldiers in service have identified themselves as a vegetarian and a Muslim, respectively, and the military provides them with meatless meals.

More than One Third of Brazilians Are Buying Less Meat During COVID-19

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than one third (34 percent) of Brazilians are actively buying less meat, according to data compiled by market research firm GlobalData. The data also showed that 14 percent of Brazlians are purchasing more meat replacements. A similar trend is emerging in China, where GlobalData found that 22 percent of residents are purchasing less meat while 23 percent are buying more meat replacements. Globally, 25 percent of consumers are buying less meat and 17 percent are purchasing more meatless alternatives. GlobalData Consumer Analyst Ryan Whittaker says that consumers in these markets are primed for offerings such as Burger King’s new Plant-Based Whopper.

Doctors Demand USDA Remove Dairy from Dietary Guidelines, Citing Racial Bias

This week, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) published its 2020 to 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which continue to promote the consumption of three servings of dairy products—which the Physicians for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) classifies as a form of dietary racism. The 1,200-doctor member group points to a 2018 resolution passed by the American Medical Association that recognized that lactose intolerance is common among many Americans, especially Black Americans, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Furthermore, PCRM cites a number of studies that link the consumption of dairy at the level recommended by the Dietary Guidelines to increased breast cancer risk by up to 80 percent and risk of death from prostate cancer by 141 percent. PCRM notes that studies have shown that breast cancer death rates are 40 percent higher among Black women, compared with white women, and Black men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men and twice as likely to die from prostate cancer than other men—all figures that point to the racially bias dairy recommendations that continue to be included in the Dietary Guidelines.

Scientists Find Compounds in Dark Chocolate May Block COVID-19

The chemical compounds in certain foods, including dark chocolate, cacao powder, green tea, and muscadine grapes, may interfere with the SARS-CoV-2 virus’s ability to replicate and cause COVID-19 symptoms, according to a new study by plant biologists at North Carolina State University. The researchers’ study aimed to evaluate the potential impact of specific nutraceuticals in foods and medicinal plants for preventing or affecting the health outcomes of COVID-19. It used computer simulations and laboratory studies to look at how the Mpro protein—an important player in the replication and transcription processes of the virus—reacted to specific compounds in certain plant foods known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Beyond Meat is getting some serious attention lately. It all started in 2016 when the company debuted its impressive, meat-like vegan Beyond Burger in the meat section of grocery stores. Then it took center stage earlier this year when it became the first vegan company to go public. And now the Beyond Burger is making its way into fast-food restaurants across the country. The company’s star product defied all our expectations and is making an enormous impact on the way meat-eaters view plant-based options. But now, suddenly, there’s an uproar of opinions on the burger’s ingredient list and perceived healthfulness. Let’s just get this point out of the way before I go any further: the Beyond Burger is not the healthiest food you can eat. But neither are a lot of foods available to us today (vegan or otherwise) and I don’t see people comparing them to dog food and praising a grass-fed version. Aveda Removes Beeswax, Goes Fully Vegan

Today, cruelty-free haircare and beauty brand Aveda announced all of its products will be 100-percent vegan worldwide. More than 500 hair care, hair color, body care, makeup, and aroma products will now be free of honey, beeswax, and beeswax-derived ingredients. “Aveda was founded on an environmental mission, so becoming vegan was a natural next step for us to continue to lessen our impact on the planet,” Christine Hall, Aveda Vice President of Research & Development, said. “We were further compelled to expedite the process when faced with the facts around the impact of animal-derived ingredients on the health of the planet.”

Though evidence abounds that dogs are happy and healthy living on a vegan diet, detractors still persist in trying to prove otherwise. To settle the debate once and for all, VegNews spoke with dog health expert Dr. Sarah Dodd, consulting veterinarian for the cruelty-free winner of the 2018 VegNews “Best Dog Food” Award, Halo Holistic Garden of Vegan dog food. Dr. Dodd reveals the whole truth about the healthiest diet for the canines who you love (spoiler alert: it’s vegan).
1. Better overall health
Veterinarian Dr. Dodd explains that unlike their wolf relatives, dogs have adapted to co-evolve with human beings, and with those adjustments, they have an enhanced ability to digest and absorb plant-derived nutrients. “Indeed, there is even evidence which suggests that, in dogs, digestibility of some plant-derived nutrients are even greater than animal-based ones,” she says. In feeding one of her own companion canines a vegan diet, Dr. Dodd saw dramatic changes. She says, “One of the dogs I live with had mild dermatitis and was dramatically underweight and muscle-wasted when I adopted her. She was transitioned to a plant-based diet and her skin- and coat-health improved, she regained most muscle, and her body condition is now ideal.”
