Fifteen Santa Fe College employees and students reported testing positive for COVID-19 between April 13 and Monday.
Of this number, 13 cases were students and two were employees.
The college’s total number of reported positive cases since last March is now 747, according to a report provided by Santa Fe spokesperson Jay Anderson. There are 12,469 students enrolled at the college this semester.
Santa Fe hosted a vaccination clinic in collaboration with the Alachua County Health Department and UF Thursday on its Northwest Campus. The event originally had 1,500 appointments available for members of the public age 18 or older to receive the Moderna vaccine. The clinic received about 400 advanced registrations but also allowed walk-ups, Anderson wrote in an email. As of Friday, Anderson was not sure what the exact number of people who received vaccines was.

The Alachua County Commission decided it’s still too soon to end the mask mandate that’s been in place since June.
The mandate requires customers to wear masks in businesses to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The commission also voted to add a section to the order barring county officials from asking residents for proof of vaccination.
The vote passed 4-1, with Commissioner Mary Alford in dissent on changing the order’s language regarding gathering of masked individuals.

With COVID-19 cases rising once again in Florida and other parts of the country, getting young people vaccinated is critical to reversing the trend and finally ending the pandemic.
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Monday that she felt a sense of “impending doom” about another surge in cases. President Joe Biden called on governors and mayors across the country to maintain mask-wearing mandates, or reinstate them if they were lifted.

You may be pleasantly surprised to hear that Gainesville has opted into a nationally recognized program to be designated age-friendly by both the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and the World Health Organization’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.
As a requirement to join the Age-Friendly Community Network, Alachua County had to apply for admission into an elite group of only 384 cities nationally and only 33 communities in Florida. The organization leading this process is Elder Options, the state-designated area agency on aging, under the umbrella of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. They administer state and federal grant-funded programs and direct services to benefit elders and people with disabilities for a 16-county area in north Florida.
