Boston will mark an act of terror with kindness and silence Thursday.
Eight years ago, a pair of brothers from Cambridge set off two bombs along Boylston Street as thousands gathered to watch runners cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon. The famous race is always held on Patriots Day in Massachusetts, which is celebrated on the third Monday of April.
Boston has since created a memorial to the three people killed and the hundreds wounded in the bombings, and now marks the tragedy with One Boston Day, where acts of kindness are paramount even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Hawaii loses two military heroes, advocates in Irwin K. Cockett Jr. and Ronald J. Hays

(Tribune News Service) Two Vietnam War heroes who went on to wear the stars of admiral and general are being remembered for their longtime contributions to Hawaii.
Retired four-star Adm. Ronald J. Hays, who was vice chief of Naval operations from 1983 to 1985 and head of U.S. Pacific Command on Oahu from 1985 to 1988, died Jan. 11 at the age of 92, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum said.
Meanwhile, Kauai-born retired Brig. Gen. Irwin K. Cockett Jr., who served on active duty and later commanded the Hawaii Army National Guard, died Nov. 5 at the age of 90. ....

(Bristol, RI) About half of the staff members at the Rhode Island Veterans Home have not received a COVID-19 vaccine shot, according to a report from the Providence Journal.As of Monday, over 90 percent of the residents at the Bristol facility have gotten vaccinated.As for the staff, a spokesperson for the state Office of Veterans Services says it s expected the percentage of those who have gotten the shot will increase with more access to community-based clinics.There are concerns that continuing high virus positivity rates among staffers could cause a delay in restoring visitor access.

92% of residents, 60% of staff at RI Veterans Home have taken first COVID vaccine dose

More than nine out of 10 residents and 60% of staff at the state-run Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol have taken their first COVID-19 vaccine shot as of this week, according to figures provided by the state. 
Like other nursing homes, residents and staff at the Veterans Home are being vaccinated as part of a federal partnership with a national pharmacy chain in this case, CVS. 
The Veterans Home got its first round of vaccinations a few weeks ago with the Pfizer vaccine. At that time, 90% of residents had taken the shot, and 56% of staff had done so. The Veterans Home has about 200 beds.  ....
