Southwest Albuquerque about to get brighter

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Let there be light – in Southwest Albuquerque.
So declared city officials recently in announcing a $2.8 million “major street lighting project” that should have area residents beaming.
The Department of Municipal Development this month will put out a request for proposal for 267 new streetlights in City Council District 3, according to a city news release.
“This project will add lights to major roadways that currently go dark at sunset, including Bridge, Tower, Blake, Gibson and more,” the release says. “It will also install 52 streetlights along the final leg of the (Albuquerque Rapid Transit) route on Central Avenue from Coors Boulevard to Unser, so every streetlight on Central from Louisiana Avenue to Unser will look and operate the same.” ....

Editorial: Given track record, buying a BYD bus needs due diligence » Albuquerque Journal

As high-profile procurement spats go, the one between the city of Albuquerque and California-based BYD Motors Inc. over a fleet of allegedly faulty 60-foot electric buses the city had planned to buy for the ill-fated Albuquerque Rapid Transit project was a doozy.
So Albuquerque residents who followed that fight, waged both at the microphone and in court between Mayor Tim Keller’s administration and BYD – aka Build Your Dreams – were likely taken aback last week with news BYD is one of three companies included in a price agreement made through the New Mexico General Services Department, meaning local governments around the state can choose BYD as a bus supplier without having to put the matter out to bid. ....

The electric buses at the center of the Albuquerque Rapid Transit debacle may be driving other New Mexico roads one day.
BYD Coach and Bus – which at one point contracted with the city of Albuquerque to provide electric buses along the ART corridor – was one of three companies included in a price agreement made through the New Mexico General Services Department on Jan. 28. That means local governments throughout the state can choose BYD as a bus supplier without having to put the matter out to bid. ....

By Susan Montoya Bryan Associated Press
One of New Mexico s largest vaccination clinics is hitting the pause button and will temporarily stop giving vaccines after administering shots for more than a week.
University of New Mexico Health Sciences officials say they want to ensure they have enough doses to give booster shots to people who have received their first shots. The clinic at the university s arena, also known as The Pit, is expected to be closed through Saturday.
The clinic was administering around 1,600 doses per day, with a goal of eventually hitting 3,000 shots daily. An official said the intent is still to hit that mark as soon as more vaccine doses are available. ....

Legislator Tests Positive For Coronavirus Within Capitol -
Associated Press, Santa Fe New Mexican, KUNM News
The Democratic speaker of the state House is restricting access by lawmakers to the House floor and closing off conference rooms after the disclosure that a Republican legislator tested positive for COVID-19, along with several earlier positive tests among legislative staff.
Speaker Brian Egolf of Santa Fe said Friday that he will begin restricting in-person access to House floor sessions to himself and one additional person from each political party.
That would establish almost entirely online participation in House committee hearings and floor debates. The Capitol is closed to the public. ....
