Installation of small-cell wireless facilities in city rights of way continued to be a focus of the Edmonds City Council Tuesday night as councilmembers held a second round of discussions on the topic. At issue is a master permit application submitted by New Cingular Wireless to install such facilities, which has raised concerns among some councilmembers and residents.
Councilmembers Tuesday night focused on two issues: the possible health effects of the radio frequency (RF) emitted by any future 5G systems installed, and the aesthetic impact if numerous small-cell facilities were installed close together in the city. ....

Should the City of Edmonds move from a one-year to a two-year budget cycle? How can the city better engage citizens in the budget process? What should the city prioritize and de-emphasize in the 2022 budget? Those were among the topics discussed during the Edmonds City Council’s budget retreat Saturday afternoon via Zoom.
The meeting facilitator was consultant Mike Bailey, a former finance director for the cities of Redmond, Renton and Lynnwood, who also ran a similar budget retreat for the council in 2020. ....

The Edmonds City Council Tuesday night agreed with a city staff recommendation to contract with a human services agency to provide a social worker rather than hire an employee to do the work.
Councilmembers also began going through amendments to the city’s just-passed tree code, although ran out of time and agreed to continue the effort at a later date. More discussion on the hiring of a city social worker, a presentation on the public process for the 4th Avenue Cultural Corridor and amendments to the city’s new tree code are among the items on the agenda for the Tuesday, March 9, Edmonds City Council business meeting, starting at 7 p.m.

After years of discussion, citizen feedback and rewrites, the Edmonds City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved a set of new regulations aimed at retaining existing trees during development on private property in Edmonds. The council also passed an interim emergency six-month ordinance prohibiting the removal of trees greater than 24 inches in diameter from any private property unless those trees are deemed hazardous.
The latter measure, proposed by Council President Susan Paine and Councilmember Laura Johnson, is aimed at giving the council time to work on additional, more detailed tree regulations to be included in city code. That additional effort which staff outlined as stage 2 of a two-stage p ....
