DC reveals 2 proposals for Reeves Center redevelopment

The District has released presentations from two separate teams of developers for the redevelopment of the the Frank D. Reeves Municipal Building, known as the Reeves Center, in the heart of the U Street Corridor.
The redevelopment, at 2000 14th St. NW at U Street, will be the home of the NAACP when it relocates its headquarters from Baltimore to D.C.
The first proposal, from Legacy Community Partners, includes 14 development teams and investors led by Dantes Partners and Menkiti Group, and would include 250 apartments, 46 condos, 100,000 square feet of office space and a 150-room hotel. Retailers would include D.C. Central Kitchen, a food hall and a community partnership with St. Augustine Catholic Church. ....

As a frigid dawn broke here on Fat Tuesday better known as Mardi Gras the streets of Treme were unusually hushed.
No skeletons tromped through the historically Black neighborhood pounding on drums and knocking on doors to wake up residents and warn them of their mortality, a ritual that its practitioners say dates to 1819.
As a trickle of locals and tourists approached the Backstreet Cultural Museum, a tiny treasure trove of Black culture that is an early gathering point for the Northside Skull and Bone Gang, they found the front door shut and the lights off.
“No events will be scheduled on Mardi Gras day here due to COVID restrictions,” said a note scrawled on the porch. “Sorry.” ....

Razing the Mother Church: The Sale and Destruction of Saint Augustine Catholic Church

In 1946, two attorneys finalized their purchase of a historic church building in the heart of Washington.
[1] For seventy years, Saint Augustine Catholic Church at 15
th and L was the place where the Black Catholics of the District were baptized, educated, given communion, and buried. In two years, it would be rubble.
At its founding in 1858, the church then known as Blessed Martin de Porres established the first school for Black children in the District of Columbia.
[2] Operating out of the basement of St. Matthew’s Cathedral, the free Black Catholics of Martin de Porres sought to create a church of their own that would meet the needs of the Black community and grant them the dignity that was afforded to their white counterparts. ....
