Mike King to return New Zealand Order of Merit medal because mental health system is 'still broken'

"Three years ago I remember standing on a podium with you singing your party's praises as you announced that you were spending $1.9b on mental health," he writes.
"As long as I live I will never forget that day. There was such a euphoric feeling in the air, full of optimism and hope and I believed with all my heart things were about to change, finally we had a government who cared."
But three years on, he says he feels they've both "let everybody down".
"I know none of this is your fault Prime Minister and I know you truly care about our children but the system is broken and it seems to our most vulnerable Kiwis and their families that no one is trying to fix it," he says.

BREAKING: Mike King hands back his NZOM Medal because of a lack of progress on suicide

AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR PRIMEMINISTER
Dear Primeminister
Tomorrow is the 3rd anniversary of Gumboot Friday and to celebrate I’ll be walking 100,000 meters in Gumboots around the Auckland Domain to raise $100k that will go towards our $5 million goal.
If we reach our goal it will provide over 37,000 free non stigmatising counselling sessions for our kids. I say non stigmatising because under the current system the only way young people can get free counselling is to go to a doctor, be diagnosed mentally ill, and then go on a long waiting list before being met by an often burnt out mental health professional.

Gumboot Friday, this week, is about awareness and solidarity with those suffering depression, who have described it as like struggling to walk through mud in gumboots every day.
Last year 175 young people in New Zealand died by suicide and an estimated 3500 attempted to take their own life, according to gumbootfriday.org.nz.
I am Hope, the youth arm of The Key to Life Charitable Trust, hosts the event where founder Mike King, and other supporters, walk 100 kilometres in their gumboots around the Auckland Domain for 24 hours.

Five of the best picturesque and peaceful walks in Auckland

Tens of thousands of us would have headed to Sydney this year for a holiday. Here's why a staycation in Auckland is better.
The City of Sails is also the City of Astoundingly Diverse Scenery, making its walks more of a pleasure than an exercise in endurance. Although if you’re up for a challenge, the City of Volcanoes, as Auckland is also known, won’t disappoint.
Tāmaki Drive, Cornwall Park and those 50-plus volcanoes are all excellent choices for a wander, but you’ll find some of the city’s most picturesque – and peaceful – walks in the regional parks at its furthest reaches.
